An exhaust gas purification filter is configured to he disposed in an exhaust passage in a gasoline engine. The exhaust gas purification filter includes partition walls including a plurality of pores, a plurality of cells partitioned by the partition walls, and sealing portions alternately sealing ends of a plurality of the cells in the exhaust gas purification filter. The partition walls each have an average pore diameter of more than 16 μm and less than 21 μm, and have a ratio of an average surface opening diameter of the pores in a partition wall surface to the average pore diameter of the partition wall of 0.66 or more and 0.94 or less.

Exhaust gas purification filter

An exhaust gas purification filter includes a honeycomb structure part and sealing parts. The honeycomb structure part has a porous partition wall and a plurality of cells defined by the partition wall to form exhaust gas flow paths. The sealing parts seal alternately a gas inflow-side end face or a gas outflow-side end face of the cells. The exhaust gas purification filter includes fine pores with diameters of 10 &#x3bc;m or less measured by the mercury intrusion method that account for 5% or more of all pores by volume in the honeycomb structure part. The partition wall has a plurality of communication pores communicating between the cells adjacent to the partition wall and has constricted communication pore of which a largest diameter &#x3a6;and a smallest diameter &#x3a6;satisfy relationships &#x3a6;&#x2265;50, 100&#xd7;&#x3a6;/&#x3a6;&#x2264;20.

Provided is an exhaust gas purifying filter used with a HC purifying catalyst supported thereon. Numerous pores are formed in partitions of the exhaust gas purifying filter. In a cross-section of the partition, pores are open at a passage surface, having an open end of which the opening diameter is 50 &#x3bc;m or larger. In the cross-section of the partitions, the partitions include a narrow part where a pore diameter is 5 &#x3bc;m or more and the pore diameter becomes a minimum in a region. In the cross-section of the partitions, the region is positioned between a pair of virtual lines Land Lextending from opposing sides of the opening end to a passage surface positioned opposite to the opening end along the wall thickness direction X, Z. The pore diameter at the narrow part is 6% or more and less than or equal to 20% of the opening diameter.

Exhaust gas purifying filter

Failure detection apparatus for a particulate filter includes: a sensor having a particulate matter detection unit that outputs a signal corresponding to the amount of accumulated PM, and a heater unit that heats the particulate matter detection unit; a regeneration control unit that causes the heater unit to heat the particulate matter detection unit to a regeneration temperature allowing the particulate matter to be burned off; a start detection unit that determines the start of the internal combustion engine; failure determination unit that determines whether exhaust gas contains water droplets while the engine is in operation; a heating control unit that causes the heater unit to heat the particulate matter detection unit to a first temperature allowing the accumulated particulate matter to remain and the moisture included in the particulate matter to be removed; and failure determination unit that determines whether the filter has failure based on a sensor output value.

Failure detection apparatus and failure detection method for particulate filter

A method of manufacturing a particulate matter detection element for detecting particulate matter in a gas to be measured includes manufacturing flat-shaped conductor layers, flat-shaped insulating layers, a laminated structure in which the conductor layers and the insulating layers are alternately laminated, and a detecting unit having the conductor layers of different polarities as a pair of detection electrodes on a cross section of the laminated structure. The conductor layers each have a constant thickness, and include conductor layer planar portions having a stripped-pattern cross section, and tapered conductor layer end edge portions each having a triangular cross section, provided on both sides of the respective conductor layer planar portions.

Method of manufacturing particulate matter detection element

A honeycomb structure body has a skin part of a cylindrical shape and a honeycomb structural part formed with the skin part together in a monolithic body. The skin part and the honeycomb structural part have partition walls of a porous structure. The cells have first cells arranged adjacent to the skin part and second cells arranged adjacent to the first cells. The skin part, the first cells and the second cells form an outer peripheral section. A central section is arranged inside the outer peripheral section. The honeycomb structure body satisfies a relationship in which a thermal expansion coefficient of the outer peripheral section is greater than a thermal expansion coefficient of the central section.

Honeycomb structure body

A particulate matter detection device includes a sensor unit which has a detection unit provided with a pair of electrodes and a heater unit provided with a heater electrode and which is configured to output a signal corresponding to the amount of particulate matter, and a sensor control unit which detects the number of particles of the particulate matter. The sensor control unit has a capture control unit, a heating control unit to heat the detection unit to a first temperature at which a SOF is volatilizable and a second temperature at which soot is burnable, an output changing ratio calculation unit to calculate a ratio between a first output value at the first temperature and a second output value as the maximum output upon heating to the second temperature, and a particle number calculation unit to estimate the average particle diameter of the particulate matter from a value corrected based on the temperature of the sensor unit at the second output value to calculate the number of particles.

Particulate matter detection device

A failure detection device has a PM filter, a PM detection sensor having a sensor element arranged at a downstream of the PM filter, an ECU and a PM detection sensor control part. The sensor element detects an amount of PM in exhaust gas, and generates a sensor signal corresponding to the detected PM amount. A load detection part in the ECU detects an engine load. A judgment execution determination part in the control part compares the detected engine load with a threshold value, and determines whether a PM filter failure detection should be performed based on the comparison result. A failure judgment part compares the sensor signal with a failure judgment threshold value when the determination part decides that it is necessary to perform the failure detection of the PM filter, and determines that the PM filter failure has occurred based on the latter comparison result.

Failure detection device for particulate matter filter and method of detecting failure of particulate matter filter

A particulate matter detection sensor includes a particulate matter detection unit for changing the output of an electrical signal in accordance with change in the electrical characteristics due to the deposition of particulate matter contained in an exhaust gas G discharged from an internal combustion engine, and a cover member having a cylindrical cover wall and disposed to surround the particulate matter detection unit. The particulate matter detection unit includes a deposition portion on which a part of the particulate matter is deposited, and a plurality of detection electrodes disposed being spaced apart from each other on the deposition portion. The deposition portion of the particulate matter detection unit is arranged so as to be oriented towards the tip side of the cover member. The cover wall of the cover member includes a plurality of exhaust gas introduction holes formed at positions closer to the tip side than is the deposition portion.

Particulate matter detection sensor

A control unit () estimates an output value of a PM sensor (S) located at a downstream side of a DPF used as a reference filter, and detects whether the estimated output value exceeds a predetermined value (S). When the estimated output value exceeds the predetermined value (YES in S), the control unit detects an output value of the PM sensor (S), and a heater heats the PM sensor (S). The control unit detects an output value of the PM sensor (S) after the PM sensor is heated, and calculates a change ratio of the output values of the PM sensor before and after heating (S). The control unit estimates an average particle size of PM based on the calculated change ratio (S), and detects whether the DPF has failed based on a comparison result of a corrected output value of the PM sensor with a threshold value.

Filter failure detection device and particulate matter detection device

The particulate matter detection sensor includes a conductive part, and the pair of electrodes that are arranged at specified spacing so as to face each other. The conductive part is formed into a plate shape using a conductive material having electrical resistivity that is higher than particulate matter. One major surface of the conductive part functions as an accumulation surface on which particulate matter accumulates. The pair of electrodes are formed on this accumulation surface.

Particulate matter detection sensor and particulate matter detection apparatus

A particulate matter detection element for detecting particulate matter in a gas to be measured includes flat-shaped conductor layers, flat-shaped insulating layers, a laminated structure in which the conductor layers and the insulating layers are alternately laminated, and a detecting unit having the conductor layers of different polarities as a pair of detection electrodes on a cross section of the laminated structure. The conductor layers each have a constant thickness, and include conductor layer planar portions having a stripped-pattern cross section, and tapered conductor layer end edge portions each having a triangular cross section, provided on both sides of the respective conductor layer planar portions.

Particulate matter detection element, particulate matter detection sensor, and method of manufacturing particulate matter detection element

A particulate matter sensor detecting particulate matter in exhaust emissions is provided, which is resistant to having sensor surfaces buried by particulate matter residue. Detection electrodes are provided, with alternating polarity, laminated in a laminating direction, separated by insulation. Of the detection electrodes, first detection electrodes of one polarity and second detection electrodes of the other polarity are exposed perpendicular to the laminating direction. In the direction perpendicular to the laminating direction, the particulate matter sensor has target accumulating parts on which the particulate matter is accumulated. In the target accumulating parts, the thickness Wof the first detection electrodes in the laminating direction is greater than the thickness Wof the second detection electrodes in the laminating direction.

Particulate matter detection element

A particulate matter detection elementincludes paired detection electrodesfor detecting particulate matter contained in exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine, and insulating membermade of electrically insulating material. In the particulate matter detection element, at least part of the paired detection electrodesis exposed from the insulating memberin the direction perpendicular to the lamination direction of the paired detection electrodes, to cause part of the particulate matter to deposit thereon. The surface roughness of at least the insulating member disposed between the paired detection electrodes is between 0.8 &#x3bc;m and 8.0 &#x3bc;m in 10-point average roughness.

Particulate matter detection element and particulate matter detection sensor

A particulate matter detection sensor has an element part for detecting an amount of PM contained in exhaust gas emitted from an internal combustion engine. A deposition part and at least a pair of detection electrodes are formed on an end surface of the element part. Some of particles of PM is deposited on the deposition part. The pair of detection electrodes are arranged on the deposition part. The particulate matter detection sensor changes its output electrical signal according to variation of electrical properties between the pair of the detection electrodes due to deposition of PM on the deposition part. A concave collection part is formed on the deposition part. The concave collection part has a concaved shape when viewed from the edge surface of the element part.
