A method for producing L-sorbose by microbiological oxidation of D-sorbitol which comprises adding D-sorbitol to a culture liquid in such a concentration that it does not go up to over about 5% during and after the growth phase of a microorganism used, while circulating a culture exhaust gas enriched with oxygen gas, and releasing a part of said exhaust gas out of the system. An apparatus for culturing microorganisms suitable for the method is also disclosed.

By cultivating a D-ribose-producing microorganism of the genus Bacillus in a medium containing nutrients necessary for its growth, wherein the concentrations of L-tryptophan and L-tyrosine in the medium are controlled at 3 .mu.g/ml or less and 10 .mu.g/ml or less, respectively. D-ribose is produced in a good yield and the by-production of gluconic acid is efficiently suppressed.

A novel Antibiotic SB-72310 is produced by cultivating a microorganism belonging to the genus Pseudomonas and being capable of producing Antibiotic SB-72310 in a culture medium to have Antibiotic SB-72310 elaborated and accumulated in the cultured broth and recovering the antibiotic. Antibiotic SB-72310 is useful as a germicide or disinfectant.

Deacetoxycephalosporin C can be produced with advantage by fermentation of a microorganism which belongs to the genus Streptomyces, Cephalosporium, Emericellopsis, Paecilomyces, Anixiopsis, Arachnomyces or Spriroidium and is capable of producing deacetoxycephalosporin C. Deacetoxycephalosporin C is a useful antibiotic as such or can be used as a starting material for the production of other various cephalosporin antibiotics.
