A bookbinding apparatus for trimming sheets includes an adhesive applying device for applying adhesive to a back of the sheets; a trimming blade disposed in a trimming position; a bunch position changing device disposed in a transport path to change a position of the sheets in the trimming position; a blade receiving member having at least first and second blade receiving areas with different blade receiving surfaces contacting with the trimming blade; a driving device positioning the trimming blade between a cut position for bringing the trimming blade into contact with the blade receiving member and a spaced waiting position; a shift device selectively shifting one of the first and second blade receiving areas to a predetermined trimming position, and a control device for controlling the shift means and the driving means.

The present invention comprises a light volume detection means for detecting the light volume according to the deviation amount at a sheet transfer position in the width direction of a sheet end to be transferred, the light volume detection mean being constituted by a light emitting element and a light receiving element having a light receiving surface of a prescribed length in the width direction of the sheet, and at least either said light receiving element or the light emitting element can be moved to a position in the sheet width direction according to the size of the sheet placed on the feed tray. Therefore, even if the size of the sheet transferred by the transfer means is different, the light volume detection means is able to detect the light volume at an adequate position according to the size of the sheet, the detection accuracy of the position deviation amount is enhanced with respect to the sheet different in size, and the accurate deviation amount can be detected.

A sheet feeding apparatus includes two transport devices arranged in a sheet guide that guides a sheet from a stacker to a processing position for reading an image or printing. A double feed detection device is arranged between the transport devices for detecting a double feed of the sheets over a predetermined length region (measurement length). A sheet length recognition device is provided for recognizing at least two portions of a length of the sheet stacked on the stacker in a transport direction, and a judgment device is provided for judging the double feed of the sheets based upon detection data from the double feed detection device. The judgment device judges the double feed of the sheets according to detection data of one measurement region selected from a plurality of measurement regions based on information obtained from the sheet length recognition device.

Sheet feeding apparatus, image reading apparatus equipped with the same, and method of detecting double feed

An image reading apparatus includes a transfer device for transferring a sheet, and a reading device for reading an image of the sheet at a prescribed read position. A light volume detection device is arranged at a position of one side end in a direction perpendicular to a transfer direction of the sheet to be transferred to detect the light volume according to a deviation amount at a sheet transfer position in a direction perpendicular to the transfer direction of the sheet end. An operation device calculates the deviation amount with respect to a reference position of the sheet transfer position from a difference between the light volume detected by the light volume detection device when the sheet is not present at the sheet transfer position and the light volume detected by the light volume detection device when the sheet is transferred to the sheet transfer position.

Sheet transfer apparatus and image reading apparatus

A sheet feeding apparatus includes a sheet size recognition device for recognizing length of a sheet placed on a stacker in a transport direction, an ultrasonic double feed detection device arranged between a first transport device and a second transport device for detecting a double feed of sheets, and a transport length detection device for detecting a transport length of the sheet transported by the first and second transport devices from a leading edge of the sheet to a trailing edge of the sheet. A comparison device compares the length of the sheet recognized by the sheet size recognition device and the transport length of the sheet detected by the transport length detection device. A judgment device judges the double feed of the sheets based on at least one of a comparison result from the comparison device and a detection result from the double feed detection device.

A sheet handling apparatus includes a sheet stacker for stacking sheets; a separating device for separating and feeding the sheets stacked on the sheet stacker; and a register roller disposed adjacent to the separating device for correcting a skew of the sheet. An ultrasonic wave sensor composed of a wave sending sensor and a wave receiving sensor is arranged between the separating device and the register roller obliquely relative to a surface of the sheet. A judging device is electrically connected to the ultrasonic wave sensor for detecting a double feed of the sheets based upon an output signal from the wave receiving sensor at a predetermined time after the register roller starts rotating. A control device electrically connected to the judging device and the register roller controls the register roller to stop and rotate.

A sheet supplying device includes a stacker for placing sheets; a delivery device for separating and feeding the sheets on the stacker; a register device for temporarily holding a sheet; a sheet conveying guide for guiding the sheet from the register device to a processing position; a sheet sensor disposed between the delivery device and the register device for detecting the sheet; at least one driving device for driving the delivery device and the register device; a conveyance control device for controlling the driving device so that the delivery device and the register device form a loop of the sheet according to a signal from the sheet sensor and an overlap sensor disposed between the register device and the processing position for detecting overlapping of the sheet. An overlap determining device determines overlapping of the sheet according to signals from the sheet sensor and the overlap sensor.

A sheet conveying apparatus is provided including a sheet feed tray on which sheets of a plurality of sizes are placed. A conveying unit conveys a sheet on the sheet feed tray to a predetermined processing position. A sheet position detector has a plurality of light-emitting units respectively arranged at positions corresponding to different sheet widths and one light-receiving unit capable of moving to positions corresponding to the plurality of light-emitting units. A light reception position detector which detects the position of the light-receiving unit, and a control unit which selects one of the plurality of light-emitting units can also be provided.

A document reading apparatus and method are provided for outputting an image faithful to a document as possible even if the document is accidentally fed in an oblique fashion on the way of a sheet feeding path. For this purpose, a plurality of document end detecting sensors Sto Sare disposed on the way of the sheet feeding path, and further, a reading controllercalculates a skew quantity &#x3b8; of the document with respect to the sheet feeding pathbased on a signal output from the document end detecting sensor, thereby adjusting a document reading timing in accordance with the skew quantity.
