An organic electronic device is provided that utilizes a conductive organic thin film having a conductive network in the channel region. The conductive network comprises an organic molecular group made up of organic molecules each having a light-responsive group or a polar group bonded together by conjugated bonds. Thus, high integration and high-speed response is made possible. In addition, a method of producing a functional organic thin film fixed to a specified portion of a substrate surface by covalent bonds is provided. This method comprises preliminarily treating the substrate by performing an active hydrogen exposure treatment on the specified portion (or an active hydrogen removing treatment on the portion other than the specified portion) and reacting the active hydrogens of the specified portion with organic molecules. Thus, a high precision functional organic thin film, even one formed to the micron pattern level, can be provided.

Organic electronic device, method of producing the same, and method of operating the same

An organic electronic device of the present invention includes a substrate, at least two electrodes formed on the substrate, a conductive organic thin film that is formed on the substrate and electrically connects the electrodes, and a coating film for coating at least a portion of the electrodes. The conductive organic thin film is a polymer of organic molecules containing a conjugated-bondable group, and one end of each of the organic molecules is chemically bonded to the surface of the substrate and the conjugated-bondable groups in the organic molecules are polymerized with other conjugated-bondable groups to form a conjugated bond chain. The coating film electrically connects the electrodes to the conductive organic thin film and achieves a smaller connection resistance than that in the case where the electrodes and the conductive organic thin film are connected directly. As the coating film, a film made of metal selected from gold, platinum, and silver, a conductive polymeric film, or a monomolecular film that is chemically bonded to the electrodes can be used.

A liquid crystal display element having pretilt angles and anchoring energies with respect to liquid crystal molecules that differ between a pair of opposed substrates, a liquid crystal display element having pretilt angles and anchoring energies with respect to liquid crystal molecules that vary at a same substrate, and an optically anisotropic film having a plurality of optically different regions is provided. Thus, a liquid crystal display element that has improved display characteristics, response, and the like can be obtained. Methods of producing such liquid crystal display elements and such an optically anisotropic film are provided. The production methods are simply carried out utilizing the irradiation of polarized light. Thus, the present invention is of great value to industry.

It is an object to provide a conductive organic thin film having organic molecules that include at one end a terminal bonding group that is covalently bonded to a substrate surface, a conjugate bonding group that is located at any portion of the organic molecules and that is polymerized with other molecules, and a polar functional group that does not include active hydrogen and that is located at any portion between the terminal bonding group and the conjugate bonding group, wherein the organic molecules are oriented and their conjugate bonding groups are polymerized, forming a conduction network. A conductive organic thin film includes organic molecules, each of which has: a terminal binding group that is bound with a surface of a substrate by a covalent bond, the terminal binding group being present at one of the ends of the organic molecule; a conjugate group that is polymerized with another molecule, the conjugate group being present in the organic molecule; and a photoresponsive functional group including no active hydrogen, the photoresponsive functional group being present between the terminal binding group and the conjugate group. In the conductive organic thin film, the organic molecules are aligned, and the conjugate group of each molecule is polymerized with the conjugate group of another molecule so that a conductive network is formed. This conductive organic thin film has an optical switching function, having a conductivity that varies in response to irradiation of light.

An optical recording film in the form of a monomolecular layer, includes chemisorptive molecules that are chemically bonded by covalent bonding to a surface of a substrate. The optical recording film has the property that, when irradiated with polarized light, a long axis orientation of the chemisorptive molecules is changed to a direction in which the polarized light is irradiated. A reflective film may be formed on the substrate surface. For the chemisorptive molecules it is possible to use CH&#x2014;COO&#x2014;CH&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;SiCl, for example. The molecules undergo a dehydrochlorination with active hydrogen in the base material surface, and are chemically bonded to the base material surface by covalent bonding. Thus, an erasable or a write-once optical recording medium of high density can be provided by chemisorption without necessitating vacuum vapor deposition to form the recording layer.

The present invention is characterized in that an underlying layer solution containing a hydrolyzable compound represented byX&#x2014;(SiOX)&#x2014;SiX(where X is at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of a halogen, an alkoxy group, and an isocyanate group and n is an integer equal to or more than 0) is brought into contact with a surface of a base material, the underlying layer solution is dried at a temperature less than 300&#xb0; C. to form an underlying layer, a solution containing a silane-based compound is brought into contact with a surface of the underlying layer to cause chemical adsorption of the molecules of the silane-based compound to the surface of the underlying layer, and the base material is sintered at a temperature of 300&#xb0; C. or more. This improves the water repellency, resistance, and heat resistance of a functional film composed of the silane-based compound, which is for modifying the properties of the surface of the base material.
