The test fixture has a three dimensional structure with contact pads configured to make contact with electrically conductive contact pads at the trailing edge of the slider. The present disclosure generally relates to the structure of a perpendicular magnetic write head for use in a magnetic disk drive. A shingled-microwave-assisted magnetic recording head for use in a high-areal-density hard disk drive comprises a trailing shield, a flare-shaped main pole, one or more side shields, a spin torque oscillator, and two asymmetric side gaps, where one side gap has a smaller width than the other side gap. The spin torque oscillator shares a first continuous edge with the main pole on a side adjacent the side gap having the smaller width and shares a second continuous edge adjacent a media facing surface. The angle of the spin torque oscillator and the main pole formed by the media facing surface and the narrow side gap is greater than about 90&#xb0;.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole adapted for producing a writing magnetic field, a trailing shield positioned on a trailing side of the main pole, wherein a trailing gap is positioned between the trailing shield and the main pole, and a side shield positioned on at least one side of the main pole in a cross-track direction, wherein a side gap is positioned between the side shield and the main pole, wherein the main pole has an asymmetrical shape at an air bearing surface (ABS) thereof. A magnetic write head for magnetic data recording that has a magnetic write pole and a magnetic side shield structure, wherein the flare angle and bevel angle of the write pole are different from the flare angle and bevel angle of the magnetic side shield structure. The magnetic side shield has a flare angle that is greater than that of the write pole, and has a bevel angle that is smaller than that of the write pole. This advantageously provides a strong write field, while also preventing adjacent track and far track interference. The write head can include a bi-layer non-magnetic side gap structure, wherein one layer of the bi-layer side gap structure has a uniform thickness and the other layer has a non-uniform thickness.

The write head includes a magnetic write pole and a magnetic shield that is separated from the trailing edge of the write pole by a non-magnetic trailing gap layer and is separated from the sides of the write pole by non-magnetic side gap layers. The trailing gap extends laterally beyond the side gap layers, and a convex bump is formed at an edge of the magnetic shield at a location near the trailing end of each of the side gap layers.

In another embodiment, the side shield includes a first magnetic film, and the trailing shield includes a second magnetic film, wherein a magnetic permeability of the first magnetic film is lower than a magnetic permeability of the second magnetic film.

A magnetic write head having a shield structure that provides both a leading shield and side shielding function. The magnetic shield is separated from the sides and leading edge of the write pole by a non-magnetic gap layer that has a non-uniform thickness. The non-magnetic gap layer is thicker near the leading edge and thinner at the trailing edge. This allows for increased side field gradient near the trailing edge of the write pole and decreased write field loss at the leading edge of the write pole.

The head also includes a non-magnetic film interposed between the magnetic shield and the main magnetic pole, a first magnetic film magnetically coupled to the magnetic shield and the main magnetic pole on a side opposite a floating surface side thereof, and a coil surrounding a magnetic circuit, the magnetic circuit comprising the main magnetic pole and the first magnetic film. According to one embodiment, a magnetic head for perpendicular recording includes a main pole, a first soft magnetic film disposed on a trailing side of the main pole, and a first nonmagnetic film interposed between the main pole and the first soft magnetic film. A thickness of the main pole is increased in a depth direction from an air bearing surface using an inclination, and a thickness of the first nonmagnetic film increases in the depth direction from the air bearing surface. In another embodiment, an angle from a horizontal plane of an upper surface of the first nonmagnetic film is greater than an angle from a horizontal plane of a lower surface of the first nonmagnetic film in contact with the main pole. Other heads, methods, and systems are described according to more embodiments.

A perpendicular magnetic recording head according to one embodiment includes a main pole; first magnetic films arranged on both sides of the main pole in a track width direction via nonmagnetic films; and a second magnetic film arranged on a trailing side of the main pole via a nonmagnetic film; wherein the depths of the first magnetic films from an air bearing surface are smaller than the depth of the second magnetic film from the air bearing surface at least at a periphery of the main pole. A perpendicular magnetic recording head according to another embodiment includes a main pole; first magnetic films arranged on both sides of the main pole in a track width direction via nonmagnetic films; and a second magnetic film arranged on a trailing side of the main pole via a nonmagnetic film; wherein the main pole and the first magnetic films have respective tapered portions whose thicknesses become larger toward the side opposite to an air bearing surface, and the tapered portions are in contact with the second magnetic film. Embodiments of the present invention help to suppress broadening of a write field of a main pole of a perpendicular recording head and realize high-quality write operation. According to one embodiment, a main pole of a write head extends to an air bearing surface or a medium-facing surface and has an inverted trapezoid in cross-section. First soft magnetic films called side shields are separately disposed through a nonmagnetic film on both sides of the main pole. The air bearing surface side end of the first soft magnetic film is provided to recede from the air bearing surface. The first soft magnetic film and the main pole are formed in the same layer. A second soft magnetic film called a trailing shield is provided above the main pole on the air bearing surface side via a nonmagnetic film.

According to one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a shield having a groove and a main magnetic pole positioned in the groove of the shield. The groove includes a bottom side near a leading edge of the shield and inclined sides extending from the bottom side toward a trailing edge of the shield and from an ABS side of the head to a recessed side of the shield opposite the ABS. The shield is coupled to a non-magnetic layer at the recessed side, a cross-sectional area of the groove is less at a position nearer to the substrate than a position farther from the substrate, a cross-sectional area of the groove is less at a position nearer to the ABS side of the shield than a position farther from the ABS side of the shield, and a portion of the sides of the groove have curved surfaces.
