A method and system is provided for providing local business-based recommendations or search results to visitors. In response to a request for a digital map of a geographic area, the system determines whether a user is familiar with the geographic area based on the user's location history. In response to determining that the user is unfamiliar with the geographic area and therefore is a visitor of the geographic area, the system provides recommendations, suggestions, or search results to the user which includes local businesses which are of interest to the user. The local businesses may include local businesses which are related to a geographic search query provided by the user, or may include local businesses recommended by the system according to the time of day, time of year, events within the geographic area such as events stored in the user's virtual calendar, reviews of the local businesses, etc.

Method and system for providing recommendations and search results to visitors with a focus on local businesses

A method and system is provided for identifying local businesses visited by a user. Location and movement data for a user is analyzed to identify points of interest (POIs) visited by a user, and POIs which were not visited while the user travelled to the visited POIs. The POIs are categorized as corresponding to local businesses or national/global businesses, and local business metrics are generated according to frequencies in which the user visits local businesses and/or passes over national/global businesses in favor of local businesses. Then the local business metrics are presented on the user's client computing device along with a heat map indicating frequencies in which the user visited businesses within a geographic area, and/or a cool map indicating frequencies in which the user passed by businesses within the geographic area.

Method and system for tracking local businesses visited by a user

A method of utilizing opportunity gain for personal enrichment of a user including receiving a selection of a personal enrichment goal (e.g., buying a vehicle or home, traveling, saving for retirement). The method also includes monitoring a routine of the user that includes an activity (e.g., daily commute, shopping, eating habits), and an amount of the personal commodity (e.g., money) is used when the user performs the activity. An average amount of the personal commodity used to perform the activity in the past is determined, and an excess amount of the personal commodity generated when the user deviates from the routine is determined. The excess amount of the personal commodity is determined as a function of the average amount and the amount of the personal commodity. The user may be notified that the excess amount of the personal commodity may be applied to achievement of the personal enrichment goal.
