The invention provides methods for regenerating activated carbon that have been used in absorbing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous solution. In these methods, the activated carbon is treated with a solution of base in alcohol, which has been found to impart superior properties to the activated carbon.

Systems and methods of regenerating activated carbon

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are destroyed by oxidation in supercritical conditions. PFAS in water can be concentrated and prepared for destruction in a pretreatment phase. Following annihilation of the PFAS in supercritical conditions to levels below 5 parts per trillion (ppt), the water effluent can be used to recover heat, returned to sub-critical conditions, and then released back into the environment.

Destruction of PFAS via an oxidation process and apparatus suitable for transportation to contaminated sites

We have discovered that heating PFAS in the presence of silica resulted in destruction of over 90% of PFAS under surprisingly mild conditions. Experimental results are presented showing that the reaction occurs along with etching of the silica glass, presumably caused by HF created during the reaction or in previous reactions. The methods of destroying PFAS are especially effective for treating relatively concentrated solutions such as those commonly encountered in AFFF waste stock and cleanup near fire-fighting training sites, as well as concentrated waste solutions from industrial sites involving the manufacture or application of PFAS.

Destruction of PFAS in the presence of silica

A method of determining total organofluorine in a sample comprising PFAS, comprising: providing a solution of PFAS in an organic solvent to obtain extracted PFAS, or extracting a sample with an organic solvent to obtain extracted PFAS; treating the extracted PFAS with a sodium metal dispersion and alcohol to obtain sodium fluoride; and quantifying the amount of the fluoride. Surprisingly, we discovered that the method recovered substantial fluorine from PFAS and significantly higher yields obtained by selection of the appropriate alcohols. The method is selective for organofluorine from inorganic fluorine.
