A method of collection of the fragrance ingredient of fragrant wood comprises extracting an essential oil ingredient by a solvent from the fragrant wood and collecting the fragrance ingredient in a vapor-phase by heating the extract, a perfume composition contains the fragrance ingredient, and a cosmetic contains the fragrance ingredient. The fragrance ingredient is obtained without a burnt smell, and it has an aroma of the fragrant wood.

A natural flavor or fragrance can be easily and effectively produced by using a &ldquo;unicellularized plant&rdquo;, obtained by unicellularizing, without destroying, the cells of a plant usable as a starting material for a natural flavor or fragrance, as a material for the natural flavor or fragrance and further applying an enzymatic treatment or chemical treatment or continuously heating the same, to thereby remarkably shorten the aging period for producing the natural flavor or fragrance, or by homogenizing a plant usable as the starting material quickly after harvesting to thereby promote the aging.

A fragrance composition which contains 1,3-dimethoxy-5-methylbenzene in an amount of from 0.01 to 30% by weight as a fragrance modifier that provides a sedative effect. 1,3-Dimethoxy-5-methylbenzene used in the present invention can exhibit a sedative effect not only by itself but also when mixed with various formulations of jasmine, floral and the like types having stimulative effects. Also, since a single chemical is used as an active ingredient, the present invention is more effective than the sedative function of natural essential oil from a viewpoint of sedation. In addition, since 1,3-dimethoxy-5-methylbenzene itself has a mild scent, its sedative effect can be obtained without altering original fragrance of interest.
