A recording/reproducing apparatus includes an operating section having dual functions depending on being in an image capture mode or in a reproduction mode respectively. While one of the recording mode and the reproduction mode is being carried out, in response to start of the other mode, a controlling function of the operating section is switched to the function of the other mode, and in response to the completion of the other mode, the function of the operating section is switched to the function of the one mode.

This invention enables deleting and protecting a part of sensed image data in accordance with a situation so as to enable efficient utilization of a finite capacity of a storage medium. To realize this, an image subjected to deletion from the image data stored in a storage medium is selected and displayed in a display unit of a digital camera. If a region of interest (ROI) is set in this image, a user is asked to select the ROI, non-ROI region, or entire image as the deletion target, and the designated region is deleted from the storage medium.

A recording and reproducing apparatus includes a guide post for pulling out a tape-shaped recording medium from a cassette and wrapping the tape-shaped recording medium around a rotary drum, a guide base which supports the guide post, the guide base being movable between a first position in which the cassette can be loaded and a second position in which a recording or reproducing action can be performed with the tape-shaped recording medium wrapped around the rotary drum at a predetermined angle, and an elastic member for, after the guide base moves from the first position to the second position, urging the guide base toward the second position to position the guide base at the second position. The elastic member is disposed on an upper surface of the guide base.
