A dye receiving layer is provided on one surface side of a base material film, and a porous layer with hollow particles bonded by a binder resin provided on the other surface side, respectively. A thermal transfer sheet is provided that can yield thermally transferred images, which possess excellent various fastness or resistance properties even under severe service conditions, and comprises a transferable protective layer having good transferability. In a thermal transfer sheet comprising a substrate sheet and a thermally transferable protective layer on the substrate sheet, the thermally transferable protective layer comprises a scratch-resistant layer which is repeatedly provided one by one for each picture plane unit in the thermal transfer sheet. An area of the scratch-resistant layer for each picture plane unit is smaller than an area of an object in its transfer surface. By virtue of this construction, at the time of the transfer of a protective layer onto an object, layer cutting does not occur within the scratch-resistant layer but within other layer (such as peel layer or adhesive layer), and, consequently, the protective layer can be transferred with good transferability.

The present invention provides a method for image formation, that can yield thermally transferred images which are excellent in various fastness properties even under severe service conditions, and an intermediate transfer recording medium for use in the method for image formation. The method for image formation comprises the steps of: providing an intermediate transfer recording medium comprising a substrate film and a transfer portion provided separably on the substrate film; forming an image on the intermediate transfer recording medium in its transfer portion; transferring the transfer portion onto an object; and, thereafter, again transferring the intermediate transfer recording medium in its next transfer portion once or more onto the object with the image formed thereon. In this case, in the intermediate transfer recording medium, a hologram image is set every at least second image plane, and an image can be formed on the transfer portion having the hologram image. This can offer an advantage that the transfer portion, with a thermally transferable image formed thereon, can be transferred onto an object followed by the superimposition of a transfer portion, to be served as the outermost surface in the final form onto the transferred portion once or more to provide a strong film for protecting the thermally transferred image. Thus, the problems of the prior art could have been solved.

Disclosed is a thermal transfer image receiving sheet comprising a substrate sheet, an intermediate layer provided on at least one surface side of the substrate sheet and a dye receptor layer provided on the surface of the intermediate layer, wherein the substrate sheet is a pulp paper, the intermediate layer is formed from an organic solvent solution of a resin, and the dye receptor layer is formed from an aqueous resin liquid. By virtue of this structure, the thermal transfer image receiving sheet can be prevented from occurrence of curling caused by temperature change. Also disclosed is a thermal transfer image receiving sheet comprising a substrate sheet, an intermediate layer provided on at least one surface side of the substrate sheet and a dye receptor layer provided on the surface of the intermediate layer, wherein the intermediate layer is formed from either an acrylic resin or a resin at least a part of which is crosslinked. By virtue of this structure, the thermal transfer image receiving sheet can be excellent in smoothness, strength, cushioning properties and writing properties, and further can give an image of high density and high resolution.

According to the image formation method and the thermal transfer sheet, an intermediate transfer recording medium comprising a substrate film and a transfer part, comprising at least a receptive layer, provided separably on the substrate film is used, and, at the time of the transfer of the transfer part in the intermediate transfer recording medium onto an object, the transfer of the transfer part onto the object in its nontransfer region, onto which the transfer part should not be transferred, can be avoided without installing any special ancillary tool on an image forming apparatus. In the method for image formation, a thermal transfer sheet comprising a substrate and at least a peel-off layer provided on the substrate is provided. Further, an intermediate transfer recording medium comprising a substrate film and a transfer part, comprising at least a receptive layer, provided separably on the substrate film is provided. The thermal transfer sheet and the intermediate transfer recording medium are put on top of each other so that the peel-off layer in the thermal transfer sheet is brought into contact with the transfer part in the intermediate transfer recording medium. The assembly is heated to remove the transfer part in its predetermined region from the intermediate transfer recording medium. The transfer part is then retransferred from the intermediate transfer recording medium onto an object. That is, the transfer part in its predetermined region in the intermediate transfer recording medium is transferred onto the thermal transfer sheet side provided with the peel-off layer and is separated from the intermediate transfer recording medium side.
