A poly(N-alkylcarbazole) columnar structure having electroconductivity is provided. The poly(N-alkylcarbazole) columnar structure having electroconductivity may be produced by electrolytically polymerizing an N-alkylcarbazole in a particular solvent.

A novel nanosized or microsized material having electroconductivity that can be produced simply and in a large amount is provided. A method for producing a poly(N-alkylcarbazole) columnar structure having electroconductivity obtained by chemically polymerizing N-alkylcarbazole including alkyl having 1 to 4 carbons by adding an oxidizing agent to a solution obtained by dissolving the N-alkylcarbazole in a solvent is provided.

A liquid crystal composition which has a superior voltage transmittance (sharpness) for good color and high-speed response characteristics. The composition contains at least one of the following first component (I-a, I-b), second component (II-a to II-d) and third component (III-a to III-c) respectively:

Liquid crystal compositions are disclosed which satisfy various characteristics required of liquid crystal compositions used for TN-LCD or STN-LCD display mode, have a low viscosity to cope with the response at a high speed, have a high clearing point to cope with the change in environmental temperature, and have a small dependency of the pitch length on temperature. The liquid crystal compositions comprise, as a first component, at least one liquid crystalline 4-substituted-benzonitrile having a positive dielectric anisotropy, as a second component, at least one liquid crystalline compound having a small positive or negative dielectric anisotropy, and as chiral component A, at least one optically active compound expressed by general formula (X-a) or (X-b) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.0 represents an alkyl group or alkoxy group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, X represents a halogen atom or CN, and Y represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or hydrogen atom.

A chiral nematic liquid crystal composition which has a broad d/P margin, particularly for corresponding to a large size of LCD panel, while satisfying various characteristics sought for STN display mode, and which contains as a first component, at least one member of compounds expressed by the formulas (I-a) to (I-d); as a second component, at least one member of compounds expressed by the formulas (II) to (V); and as a third component, cholesteryl nonanoate, ##STR1## wherein the substituents are described herein.

Liquid crystal compositions having a small value of .gamma. (V.sub.10 /V.sub.90) and a small .tau. A liquid crystal composition comprising, for example, a first component of the formula (1-2), a second component of the formula (2-a) and a third component of the formulas (3) and (4), the respective contents being 3 to 30%, 10 to 60% and 20 to 80%, each by weight, ##STR1## wherein R, R.sup.1, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 each independently represent an alkyl group of C.sub.1-10 or an alkenyl group of C.sub.2-10 ; R.sup.7 represents an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an alkoxymethyl group of C.sub.1-10 ; B.sup.1, C, D and J represent 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; E represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; G represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene wherein H at the lateral positions may be replaced by F; Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.6 represent --COO--, --C.sub.2 H.sub.4 -- or a single bond; and Z.sup.5 and Z.sup.7 represent --C--C-- or a single bond.

A chiral, nematic liquid crystal composition suitable to STN-LCD, having superior steepness, rapid response and being able to prevent occurrence of high order and low order domain of LCD, which composition contains as a first component, at least one compound expressed by the formula (1) ##STR1## as a second component, at least one compound expressed by the formula (2) ##STR2## and as a third component, at least one compound of benzonitrile group, ##STR3## and further having a chiral dopant as a fourth component. In the above formulas, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represent a linear alkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, A and B each represent trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene, and R.sup.3 represents a linear alkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or a group wherein an optional --CH.sub.2 -- or two or more not adjacent --CH.sub.2 --s present in the above group are replaced by --O-- or --CH=CH--; X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 each independently represent H or F; C represents --COO--, --C.sub.2 H.sub.4 --, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; and n represents 0 or 1, and as a fourth component, a chiral dopant in a quantity in which a ratio (d/p) of the thickness (d.mu.m) of a liquid crystal layer in a liquid crystal cell to be filled with the liquid crystal composition to the helical pitch thereof (p.mu.m) is 0.03 to 2.0.

A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a SC* phase and a light-switching element using the composition are provided, which composition comprises the following components, A, B and C, each in a specified proportion: Component A has the formula ##STR1## wherein ##STR2## R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are same or different linear or branched alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy of 1-18C, X is H, halogen or CN, l, m and n are 0 or 1 and (l+m+n) is 1 or 2, and has smectic C phase; Component B has the formula ##STR3## wherein ##STR4## Y is H, halogen or CN, k is 0 or 1, R.sup.3 is linear or branched alkyl or alkoxy of 1-18C, and * is asymmetric C, and consists of optically active compounds having the same senses of Ps in SC* phase induced when dissolved in smectic C liquid crystal, to one another; and Component C has the formula ##STR5## wherein ##STR6## Z is H, halogen or CN, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are same or different linear or branched alkyl or alkoxy of 1-18C R.sup.4 is 12-18C alkyl or 1-18C linear or branched alkoxy, and * is asymmetric C, and is an optically active compound having the same sense of Ps in SC* phase induced when dissolved in smectic C liquid crystal as that of the compound of component B.
