A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer supported between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the first substrate includes a main spacer and a sub-spacer protruding toward the liquid crystal layer, a height of the main spacer is greater than a height of the sub-spacer, the second substrate includes, on a surface facing the liquid crystal layer, an alignment film, a main pedestal portion that comes into contact with the main spacer, and a sub-pedestal portion opposite the sub-spacer, an area of a top portion of the main pedestal portion is greater than an area of a top portion of the main spacer, and an area of a top portion of the sub-pedestal portion is less than an area of a top portion of the sub-spacer.

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that can retain a favorable VHR and a low residual DC voltage and minimize display unevenness such as stains and image sticking, in long-term use at high temperatures. The liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate including a pixel electrode; a second substrate facing the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate; an aromatic polyimide-based alignment film disposed on at least one of the first substrate and the second substrate; and a radical generator capable of supplying a radical to the liquid crystal layer upon being irradiated with light, the liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal compound with an alkenyl group, the aromatic polyimide-based alignment film containing at least one polymer selected from a polyimide and a polyamic acid and being in no contact with the pixel electrode, the at least one polymer containing an aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride monomer unit.

A liquid crystal panel includes pixel electrodes and a common electrode. The common electrode is disposed to overlap the pixel electrodes. A wire is connected to the common electrode. The common electrode includes a first region and a second region. The first region includes first openings. The second region includes second openings. The second region is located farther away from a point of connection with the wire than the first region. The second openings are smaller in area than the first openings.

At least the first interlayer insulating layer has a contact hole (CH) formed therein through which the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the drain electrode. A pixel of a liquid crystal panel is constituted by three subpixels. When the gradation of the pixel can be represented by only the subpixel, with setting the gradations of the subpixels to their minimum gradations, the gradation of the subpixel is determined. When the gradation of the pixel is represented by the subpixels, with setting the gradation of the subpixel to its maximum gradation and setting the gradation of the subpixel to its minimum gradation, the gradation of the subpixel is determined so that the ratio of the transmittance of the subpixel to the transmittance of the pixel is less than a limit value. When the gradation of the subpixel cannot be determined to satisfy a condition, with setting the gradation of the subpixel to its minimum gradation, the gradations of the subpixels are determined to obtain a gradation higher than or equal to the gradation of the pixel.

A display panel has a plurality of gate terminals that are formed of a gate metal layer and a plurality of source terminals that are formed of a source metal layer, disposed alternately as seen in a plane. From each of the source terminals an intermediate region and a terminal region are provided with inorganic insulating film such that a source terminal lead formed of the source metal layer is covered therewith. The intermediate region is provided with organic insulating film such that the inorganic insulating film is covered therewith. The inorganic insulating film is smaller in thickness in the terminal region than in the intermediate region. The inorganic insulating film has an opening in the terminal region to expose at least a portion of a surface of the source terminal.
