A damper restricts pivot pin rotation associated with operation of an operating section, wherein friction resistance that impedes the pivot pin rotation is changed in stepped fashion. When the pivot pin rotates in direction &#x3b1; due to depression of an accelerator pedal, a slide cam shifts an edge section of an inclined cam surface away from a rotating cam while staying in contact with a gradual first inclined region of the rotating cam's inclined cam surface. Torque around the axis of the pivot pin is produced, the entire region of the slide cam's inclined cam surface comes into contact with a steep second inclined region of the rotating cam's inclined cam surface upon accelerator pedal depression to a prescribed position (the pivot pin has rotated by a prescribed angle &#x3b8;1 in direction &#x3b1;), and the torque around the axis of the pivot pin rapidly increases.

Damper and operation unit

Provided is a damper configured so that a compact pedal unit can be obtained using the damper and so that the damper can be easily retrofitted to a pedal unit. A damper () comprises elements such as: a pair of cams (slide cam () and stationary cam ()) which rotate relative to each other about the axis (O) to cause the sloped cam surfaces () thereof to make sliding contact with each other; a coiled spring () which presses the sloped cam surface () of the slide cam () against the sloped cam surface () of the stationary cam (); a case (); and a resin roller () which is fitted in a rotatable manner on the shaft (A). The rotational motion of the slide cam () about the axis (O) is restrained by the case (), and as a result, the slide cam () rotates about the axis (O) relative to the stationary cam () in association with the rotation of the case () about O
