A color image communication apparatus can switch between a copy mode and a communication mode. An image transmission apparatus includes a color codec section for performing color image coding of a color image, a run-length codec section for performing run-length coding of a monochrome image, and a switching unit for arbitrarily switching the codec sections and to perform coding in units of pages in one communication cycle depending on whether each page is a color image or a monochrome image. Whether each page is constituted by a color image or a monochrome image is set in advance, and corresponding information is stored in a memory. It is provided an image communication apparatus which comprises multi-level generation section for generating multi-level data from received image data, color conversion section for color-converting the multi-level data from the multi-level generation section, and setting section for setting a single color mode, in which the received image data is dealt with as single color data irrespective of the color conversion section, when it is determined by communication protocol that the communication mode is the single color mode, so as to ensure satisfactory communication even with a single color image.

There is disclosed an image processing apparatus for electrically handling image information, particularly in compressed form, in which the efficiency of memory utilization is improved by storing information of plural pages in successive manner in a memory. Provision is made for ensuring that, if insufficient space is left in the memory for storage of another page of compressed image data, reading of the page in question is interrupted. An image signal coding apparatus includes reference and coding line change point detection circuits, reference line shift registers, a coding line shift register, a symbol detection circuit, coding and reference line ROM tables, and a code determination circuit. The coding line change point detection circuit receives a serial reference line image signal in synchronism with a serial coding line image signal. The reference line shift registers receive serial change point data in the reference line image signal and output parallel reference line change point data. The coding line shift register receives serial change point data in the coding line image signal and outputs parallel coding line change point data. The symbol detection circuit monitors output states of the reference and coding line shift registers. A run length counter counts the number of pixels between the change points in the coding line image signal. The ROM tables cooperate with the code determination circuit to code the coding line image signal in response to outputs from the symbol detection circuit and the run length counter.

A decoder for two-dimensionally encoded image codes such as modified READ or modified READ codes ensures fast decoding operation by outputting reference codes in parallel while serially discriminating input codes and monitoring the relationship of both codes.
