The invention provides an input/output-integrated display device equipped with a means for inputting information through handwriting comprising a protective glass plate arranged as an outermost layer on the observation side of the device, leaving a space between the protective glass plate and a part of the device facing the same. The protective glass plate is a chemically reinforced glass plate prepared by immersing, in a molten salt bath, a glass plate produced according to the floating technique and has a Young's modulus of 71 to 74 GPa and a Poisson's ratio of 0.22 to 0.24 to thus chemically reinforce the same; the protective glass plate has the side serving as the top face upon the production of the glass plate according to the floating technique and the bottom face side opposite to the top face side; the surface compression stress on the top face side is 200 to 650 MPa; the protective glass plate is arranged such that the top face faces the space; and the protective glass plate is deflected towards the bottom face side at a warpage.

The invention relates to a glass plate including (a) a glass substrate having a major surface divided into a central major portion and a peripheral portion surrounding the central major portion; and (b) an oxide film formed on the central major portion by baking a precursory film. The oxide film is not formed on the peripheral portion such that the peripheral portion is free from shrinkage force caused by the baking.

The invention relates to a vehicular glass pane having inner and outer major surfaces which are respectively disposed on a first side of a vehicular interior and a second side of a vehicular exterior. The glass pane has a glass plate and a multilayered film formed on one of the inner and outer major surfaces of the glass plate. The glass plate contains a coloring agent. The multilayered film includes a first layer which is light-absorbent and a second layer which is non-light-absorbent. The glass plate and the multilayered film are such that a visible light transmittance of the glass pane is from 25 to 55%, that a first reflectance of the inner major surface of the glass pane is up to 15%, that a second reflectance of the outer major surface of the glass pane is from 10 to 40%, that the visible light transmittance minus the first reflectance is at least 15%, and that the visible light transmittance minus the second reflectance is up to 30%. The glass pane is capable of sufficiently maintaining the vehicular occupants' privacy therethrough and the outward visibility therethrough from the vehicular interior, under various conditions.

The invention relates to a heat reflecting glass pane. This glass pane has a transparent glass plate and a multilayer coating formed on one side of the glass plate. The multilayer coating includes a first heat-reflecting layer formed on a surface of the glass plate, and a second layer formed on the first layer. The first layer has a first refractive index from 2.0 to 3.5, a first extinction coefficient from 0.2 to 1.5, and a first thickness from 20 to 80 nm. The second layer has a second refractive index from 1.6 to 2.3, a second extinction coefficient not higher than 0.03, and a second thickness from 10 to 100 nm. The second refractive index is smaller than the first refractive index. The heat reflecting glass pane does not so much reduce the reflectance of a visible light incident on the glass plate from the uncoated side, but substantially reduces the reflection of a visible light incident on the second layer from the coated side.

An ink composition for forming a thin metal oxide film contains a glass-forming component, a solvent and 10-25 wt % of a viscosity-increasing agent. The glass-forming component is one of a halogen-containing metal alkoxide, a mixture of the halogen-containing metal alkoxide and another metal alkoxide, and a mixture of the halogen-containing metal alkoxide and a metal oxide sol. The viscosity-increasing agent is at least one selected from the group consisting of nitrocellulose H7, nitrocellulose H20, nitrocellulose H60. nitrocellulose H80 and nitrocellulose H120, each of which is according to Japanese Industrial Standard K 6703. The solvent is at least one selected from the group consisting of ethylcarbitol and butylcarbitol. The ink composition has a viscosity within a range from 200 to 300 poises. The thus prepared ink composition is prolonged in pot life. The thin metal oxide film prepared from the ink composition has a refractive index substantially the same as the theoretical value and is colorless, uniform in thickness, and excellent in optical characteristics, abrasion resistance, scratch resistance and durability.

The invention relates to a transparent coating on a transparent glass pane which may be a laminated glass pane such as an automobile windshield. The present invention provides a two-layer coating including a first layer which is a transparent oxide film in direct contact with the major surface of the glass substrate and a second layer which is a transparent oxide film. The first layer has a thickness of 70-230 nm and a refractive index of 1.80-2.10 and includes a major portion and a minor portion which is exposed and adapted to be used as a combiner of a head-up display system. The second layer is formed on the major portion of the first layer so as to expose the minor portion of the first layer. The second layer has a thickness of 110-130 nm and a refractive index of 1.40-1.50. An additional film is optionally formed on the minor portion of the first layer so as to fully or partly cover the minor portion. The additional layer is adapted to be used as a wavelength-selective combiner of the head-up display system. The two-layer coating except the minor portion is adapted to be used as a reflectance reducing coating. To reduce the reflectance of perpendicularly incident light the two-layer coating can be modified into a three-layer coating by interposing another oxide film.

An ink composition for forming a thin metal oxide film contains a glass component, a viscosity-increasing agent and a solvent. The glass component is one of a halogen-containing metal alkoxide, a mixture of the halogen-containing metal alkoxide and another metal alkoxide, and a mixture of the halogen-containing metal alkoxide and a metal oxide sol. The viscosity-increasing agent is nitrocellulose H60 according to Japanese Industrial Standard K6703. The solvent is at least one of ethylcarbitol and butylcarbitol. The formed thin metal oxide film is superior in transparency, abrasion resistance and scratch resistance.

The present invention relates to a head-up display system which includes an element thereof. The element is attached to, for example, an automobile windshield so as to project light rays carrying images of display information onto the element from a luminous source in a car. The element includes first and second reflection layers. The first layer is directly attached to the windshield and has a relatively uniform reflectance throughout visible light spectrum. The second layer is directly formed on the first layer and has a selective reflection against incident visible light of wavelengths in the range from about 500 nm to about 600 nm. Thus, the light rays from the luminous source are displayed on the first and second layers in different colors.

The invention relates to a sol-gel method for forming a metal oxide film, e.g. TiO.sub.2 film or TiO.sub.2 -SiO.sub.2 film, on a substrate by applying a solution of at least one metal alkoxide to the substrate to form a sol film on the substrate, drying the sol film to cause it to turn into a gel film by hydrolysis and baking the gel film. According to the invention the viscosity of the metal alkoxide solution is adequately increased, preferably to 3-30 cP at 20.degree. C., by the addition of a combination of a hydroxypropyl cellulose of which 2 wt % aqueous solution has a viscosity of 150-400 cP at 20.degree. C. and another hydroxypropyl cellulose of which 2 wt % aqueous solution has a viscosity of 6-10 cP at 20.degree. C. Metal oxide films formed by this method are free from minute cracks and excellent in optical characteristics and durability. By this method it is possible to form a metal oxide film as thick as about 300 nm without repeating the application of the alkoxide solution to the substrate.

The invention relates to a sol-gel method for forming a patterned film of a metal compound, e.g. TiO.sub.2, SiO.sub.2, ZrO.sub.2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, TiN or Si.sub.3 N.sub.4, on a substrate by applying a metal alkoxide sol to the substrate, allowing the sol film on the substrate to turn into a gel film by hydrolysis, removing the gel film in the unnecessary area(s) by selective etching and baking the gel film in the remaining aarea(s). The selective etching of the gel film is easily accomplished by the steps of moistening the gel film in the unnecessary area(s) with a viscous liquid containing, e.g., an organic solvent or an organic acid, hardening the gel film in the remaining area(s) by mild heating, and then removing the gel film in the unnecessary area(s) by washing with a suitable liquid such as an alkali solution or, when said viscous solution contains an organic acid and water, water.

Method of forming patterned film on substrate surface by using metal

To produce a heat-reflecting glass plate by coating a glass plate surface with a titanium oxide film, a solution of a thermally decomposable organic titanium compound is sprayed onto the glass plate surface while the glass plate is kept heated. As the improvement, use is made of a chelate compound of titanium formed by coordination of two molecules of either acetylacetone or ethyl acetoacetate as chelate ligands and two molecules of a polyalcohol as nonchelate ligands to a titanium atom. Preferably the polyalcohol is a 1,3-diol, and particularly 2-ethyl-1,3-hexane diol. This chelate compound is not easily influenced by moisture and gives a titanium oxide coating film of superior quality.

Method of producing heat-reflecting glass plate by coating with titanium

An improvement in a method of coating a glass plate surface with a heat-reflecting titanium oxide film, which may optionally comprise other metal oxide(s), by spraying a solution of a thermally decomposable organic titanium compound in an organic solvent onto a sufficiently heated glass plate. As the improvement, the absolute humidity of the spraying atmosphere is maintained below about 0.008 kg H.sub.2 O/kg dry gas, whereby the resultant oxide film is practically free from tiny, opaque spots which are liable to appear in the product of conventional methods and exhibits improved resistance to chemical attacks.
