A method for producing a white powder, which includes forming on a surface of a base particle a titanium oxide film and a metallic silver film contiguously one upon another in this order, wherein the base particle includes a magnetic material, and wherein said step of forming on the surface of the base particle the titanium oxide film includes dispersing the base particle in a buffer solution and adding a titanium salt aqueous solution while agitating the dispersion.

The magnetic fluid is an excellent fluid which mightily and precisely actuates by the action of an external magnetic field so that its viscosity can be significantly increased and be easily and precisely controlled by regulating the external magnetic field applied thereto. A highly functional film-coated powder which is produced without using the method based on the hydrolysis of a metal alkoxide and without using a metal alkoxide, which is an expensive compound, or a highly flammable organic solvent and which therefore can be obtained at a low overall product cost without necessitating explosion-proof facilities in the production equipment and while attaining easy temperature and humidity regulation; and a process for producing the same. This multilayered film reflects or absorbs the light having a specific wavelength according to the thickness thereof, the sequence of layer superposition, etc.

In producing a multilayer-coated powder by coating the surface of a base powder of a metal, metal oxide, etc. with two or more layers of a metal oxide or the like, the films of a metal oxide or the like are formed through decomposition, etc. from a metal salt as an inexpensive material. This is attained by making the powder particles not to be attacked by acids, etc. when the metal salt decomposition or the like, which yields an acid, etc., is conducted. The multilayer-coated powder is characterized in that the multilayered film comprises at least one layer consisting of a metal hydroxide or metal oxide film formed by the hydrolysis of a metal alkoxide and, as a layer disposed on the outer side of that layer, a coating film consisting of a metal hydroxide or metal oxide film formed by a reaction, e.g., neutralization or pyrolysis, of a metal salt. Upon heating, the metal hydroxide or metal oxide film formed by the hydrolysis of a metal alkoxide becomes a dense metal oxide film.
