An aromatic polycarbonate extruder which is a twin screw extruder for kneading components into a molten aromatic polycarbonate, the extruder having at least one module consisting of a kneading unit, a material seal unit, a back kneading unit and full-flight unit which are arranged from an upstream side to a downstream side and a method of kneading components into an aromatic polycarbonate by using the above extruder. The present invention also provides a kneading apparatus and method for producing an aromatic polycarbonate which has an extremely small content of foreign matter and is free from residence deterioration such as coloration, crosslinking or gelation when the aromatic polycarbonate is to be kneaded with various components.

A new gamma-ray stabilizer comprising a combination of 100 parts by weight of a benzyl compound (A) having a specific chemical structure and 0.01 to 10 parts by weight of a pentaerythritol phosphorous ester (B) having a spirocyclic structure. Said stabilizer is preferably blended in such a manner that said (A) is contained in an amount of 0.01 to 10 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of a thermoplastic polymer (polycarbonate or the like), and said (B) is contained in an amount of 0.01 to 1 part by weight based on 100 parts by weight of said (A). When the thermoplastic polymer is subjected to gamma-ray irradiation, said stabilizer can efficiently protect the thermoplastic polymer from the deterioration of physical properties and yellowing; and on molding processing, the stabilizer-added polymer is suffered from little color tone deterioration and has excellent color tone, and at the same time, the polymer is scarcely suffered from molecular weight decrease on molding, and exhibits excellent thermal stability, moldability or the like. The thermoplastic polymer (especially polycarbonate) composition containing said stabilizer thus obtained is suitable for medical apparatus and medical material uses, especially a jacket case for an artificial dialyzer.

An aromatic polycarbonate composition which contains 0.05 to 65 ppm of bonded phosphorus atoms to polycarbonate chains and free phosphorus compounds consisting of a tervalent phosphorus compound and a pentavalent phosphorus compound in a specific ratio. It is excellent in transparency, color stability and residence stability at the time of molding and is suitably used in disk substrates.

A method for producing a high-quality thermoplastic branched polycarbonate which is used in blow-molding, extrusion or vacuum molding from a linear aromatic polycarbonate efficiently. The thermoplastic branched polycarbonate is produced by melt-mixing and reacting a substantially linear aromatic polycarbonate with an acid anhydride having at least two cyclic acid anhydride groups in a molecule in the presence of a basic catalyst.

An aromatic polycarbonate which has high durability and is excellent in color tone, transparency and mechanical strength, especially an aromatic polycarbonate which has high durability and stability when it is used under high temperature and high humidity conditions for a long time, and production method and use thereof. In the aromatic polycarbonate which has a sodium element content of 100 ppb or less and a content of each of Ni, Pb, Cr, Mn and Fe of 70 ppb or less and the method of producing a polycarbonate by polycondensing an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a carbonic acid diester, the above aromatic polycarbonate is produced by controlling 1) the content of sodium element contained in each of the above raw materials to 52 ppb or less, 2) the content of each of Fe, Cr, Mn, Ni and Pb to 40 ppb or less and 3) the amount of a specific catalyst to a specific value based on the content of Fe contained in the raw materials.
