The MAMR head comprises a main pole, a spin torque oscillator (STO) positioned over the main pole, and write coils coupled to the main pole. The STO generates a high frequency magnetic field on a magnetic medium. The controller is configured to supply the STO with first bias current at a first bias current level, and further supply the STO with second bias current at a second bias current level. The controller is further configured to time the second bias current to coincide with an electrical current overshoot in the write coils.

STO bias control for MAMR head reliability

A magnetic oscillator for use in Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR). The magnetic oscillator can be a spin torque oscillator and includes a magnetic spin polarization layer, a magnetic field generation layer and a non-magnetic intermediate layer sandwiched between the magnetic spin polarization layer and the magnetic field generation layer. The non-magnetic intermediate layer is constructed of a material that provides improved performance, increased lifespan and thermal robustness. The magnetic intermediate layer is constructed of an alloy of Ag and an element X. More preferably the element X can be Sn or Zn.

In one embodiment, a magnetic recording head includes: a main pole configured to generate a magnetic field for recording data on a magnetic recording medium; an oscillation device positioned above the main pole in a track direction, the oscillation device being configured to generate a high-frequency magnetic field; a magnetic capping layer positioned above the oscillation device in the track direction, the magnetic layer having a front region at a media facing side (MFS) of the magnetic recording head and a rear region positioned behind the front region in an element height direction, wherein a thickness of the front region of the magnetic capping layer is less than a thickness of the rear region thereof; and a trailing shield positioned above the magnetic capping layer in the track direction.

A magnetic recording head for microwave-assisted magnetic recording is disclosed. In one embodiment, a magnetic recording head is for applying a magnetic field from a main pole of said magnetic recording head for recording data to a disk. Further comprising a spin torque oscillator adjacent to said magnetic recording head and is for generating a high-frequency magnetic field at a stable frequency and amplitude. Further comprising a capacitor connected to an upper electrode of said spin torque oscillator via a first resistor and a lower electrode of said spin torque oscillator via a second resistor.

A microwave assisted magnetic recording head includes a recording magnetic pole unit that produces a recording field for writing to a perpendicular magnetic recording medium, and a high-frequency magnetic field oscillator that produces a high-frequency magnetic field. Magnetic head, magnetic recording method and apparatus for controlling magnetic head with spin torque oscillator in a disk drive

A magnetic write head having a write pole with a tapered trailing edge and a magnetic oscillator formed on the trailing edge of the write pole. The magnetic oscillator is sandwiched between the magnetic write pole and a trailing magnetic shield. The write head also includes a non-magnetic, electrically conductive bump structure located over a back portion of the magnetic oscillator between the magnetic oscillator and the trailing magnetic shield. The presence of the non-magnetic, electrically conductive bump structure causes electrons to properly flow through the magnetic oscillator in a direction that is generally perpendicular to the plane of the magnetic oscillator, even when the magnetic oscillator is formed on an inclined plane on the tapered trailing edge of the write pole. This thereby ensures optimal performance of the magnetic oscillator.

According to one embodiment, a CPP structure magnetoresistive head includes a magnetoresistive sensor film between a lower shield layer and an upper shield layer and a longitudinal biasing layer disposed at each side of the magnetoresistive sensor film via a read track width defining insulator film. In the stripe height direction, the length of the longitudinal biasing layer is longer than the length of a second ferromagnetic layer in which its magnetization rotates in response to the external magnetic field. The second ferromagnetic layer is one of the layers comprising the magnetoresistive sensor film. At a stripe height, the surface of each longitudinal biasing layer has a step to change the thickness thereof across the step so that the air bearing surface section thereof has a larger thickness than any other section. Other structures using a magnetoresistive head and methods of production thereof are described as well.

Magnetoresistive head with a CPP structure having suppressed side reading

Embodiments disclosed herein generally relate to a MAMR head. The MAMR head includes an STO. The STO has a first surface at a media facing surface, and a portion of the first surface has a trapezoidal shape. Having this configuration, the acute angles of the trapezoidal shaped portion provide a greater width of the STO at the media facing surface, which protect the main pole from over-etching during the fabrication of the STO. In addition, the acute angles of the trapezoidal shaped portion of the first surface are large enough to keep a low STO driving voltage and provide the MAMR head with a long operation lifetime and higher reliability.

A microwave-assisted recording head comprises a main pole configured to emit a recording magnetic field for affecting a magnetic medium, the main pole serving as a first electrode and having a front portion at an air bearing surface (ABS) and a rear portion extending from the front portion. A microwave oscillator is positioned on a trailing side surface of the main pole. The trailing-side surface of the main pole forms a flat plane along the front and rear portions and is inclined with respect to a leading side surface at the front portion. The head body is inclined at an acute angle to the ABS, such that an acute angle, between 10 and 30 degrees, is formed between the trailing side surface of the main pole and the ABS.

A spin torque oscillator is provided which is adapted to high data transfer rates and which can perform assisted magnetic recording of sufficient magnitude. A spin torque oscillator is provided with a stacked spin injection layer and a high frequency magnetic field generation layer. The stacked spin injection layer has a stacked structure in which a first magnetic layer, a coupling layer, and a second magnetic layer are stacked in the order mentioned from a far side as viewed from the high frequency magnetic field generation layer. Magnetization of the first magnetic layer and magnetization of the second magnetic layer are coupled antiparallel to each other. A polarity of the magnetization of the second magnetic layer is reversed temporally earlier than a magnetic field polarity reversal of a leakage magnetic field from the main magnetic pole.

In a Spin Torque Oscillator (STO) comprising an underlayer, a first magnetic layer disposed on the underlayer, a non-magnetic intermediate layer disposed on the first magnetic layer, and a second magnetic layer disposed on the non-magnetic intermediate layer, the non-magnetic intermediate layer is a non-magnetic alloy containing 50 at % or more of at least one kind of element selected from a first group consisting of Cu, Ag, and Au, and further at least 0.1 at % or more in total of at least one kind of element selected from a second group consisting of Cu, Ag, Au, Cr, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Ru, Os, Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ir that does not overlap with the element from the first group.

Provided are a structure of a high frequency magnetic field assisted magnetic recording head in which the positional relationship of a main magnetic pole and a spin torque oscillator in a cross-track direction is accurately determined, and in which variations are not caused in high frequency magnetic field assist characteristics, and a method of manufacturing the structure. The high frequency magnetic field assisted magnetic recording head includes a main magnetic pole, a spin torque oscillator disposed on the main magnetic pole, and an insulating side gap covering a side surface of the main magnetic pole and a side surface of the spin torque oscillator. The main magnetic pole and the spin torque oscillator are formed between both side surfaces of the side gap. Thus, a self-alignment structure of the high frequency magnetic field assisted magnetic recording head is obtained.

High frequency magnetic field assisted magnetic recording head, and method of manufacturing same

Provided is a magnetic recording medium achieving both of reduction in switching field distribution and reduction in switching field intensity by high-frequency magnetic field, thus enabling high-density recording. Magnetic grains of the magnetic recording medium are made up of a recording layer and a resonance layer. The resonance layer is disposed closer to a protective layerthan the recording layer, and a magnetic material of the recording layer has anisotropy field 1.2 times or more anisotropy field of a magnetic material of the resonance layer. The magnetic material of the recording layer has saturation magnetization substantially equal to saturation magnetization of the magnetic material of the resonance layer. At the entire resonance layer and a part of the recording layer, the magnetic grains are separated from surrounding magnetic grains by a nonmagnetic material, and at a part of the recording layer, the magnetic grains are coupled with surrounding magnetic grains.

Microwave assisted magnetic recording medium and information recording apparatus using the same

To realize a highly reliable magnetic head for a high-frequency magnetic field assisted recording system by preventing current crowding in an oscillator and increasing the current resistance of the oscillator. Between a main pole that generates a recording magnetic field and a trailing shield, an oscillator that includes a non-magnetic metal layer, a spin injection pinned layer, an intermediate layer, and a high-frequency magnetic field generation layer and that generates a high-frequency magnetic field is disposed. The non-magnetic metal layer adjacent to the main pole is tapered with the width gradually increasing from the trailing side toward the leading side.
