Disclosed is a foot switch apparatus which is connected to a tape recorder, the tape recorder having a mode control circuit which designates its operation mode. The foot switch has an automatic back spacing circuit coupled to the mode control circuit. When the foot switch operates, a recording tape on the tape recorder is rewound by a predetermined length in response to an operation of the automatic back spacing circuit.

The disclosed automatic backspace device, in a tape recorder or transcriber or the like, is rewound for a specific period of time. A transistor is turned on by an electrical current from a time constant circuit in response to tape reproduction seen by an operating switch. The transistor charges a capacitor which discharges a constant electrical current through a parallel-connected transistor in a current mirror circuit whose other transistor is supplied with a predetermined electrical current. Another transistor is turned on by the discharge current of the capacitor to carry out the rewinding of the magnetic tape.

A motor brake device comprises a plurality of transistors for shunting a circuit loop through which a back electromotive force current caused by an inertia rotation of the motor flows, in which some of these transistors are operated as an inversed transistor (a transistor operated in a state where the collector and the emitter are interchanged with each other). The brake current for the motor flows through the collector-emitter paths of the transistor and the reversed transistor, each of which exhibits a small voltage drop. Therefore, the electromagnetic brake may effectively be applied to the motor even at a considerably low back electromotive force of the motor.

The tape cassette lid opening mechanism includes a motor which causes the pivotal motion of the tape cassette lid from said first position to said second position by means of the driving force of the motor.

In a tape recorder, which has a circuit for producing pulses according to the running of a tape, there is provided an electronic counter circuit having a counter for counting pulses produced from that circuit and a display section for displaying the count. The electronic counter circuit includes a missing-pulse detector for detecting the pulse interval of the output pulse signal of the pulse generating circuit and producing a detection signal when the detected pulse interval exceeds a predetermined interval, a circuit for producing an alarm for a predetermined period of time according to the output signal of the missing-pulse detector, and a circuit for supplying a rotation stop signal to a motor of the tape recorder according to the output signal of the missing-pulse detector.
