The present invention provides an electrical power supply system for an automotive vehicle with high reliability and small size in which an adequate power is supplied to both a high power load like a blower motor and a conventional load like a battery by using a conventional alternator. The power supply system for the automotive vehicle comprises: an alternator with an armature winding and a field coil, a stepping-up DC/DC converter for applying a stepped up voltage of a battery to the field coil, a regulator for controlling an output voltage of the alternator by changing the output voltage in response to a rotating speed for supplying a power to the high power load, and for controlling the output voltage to be a charging voltage of the battery.

In a stator for an alternator includes electric conductors which include a plurality of winding sub-portions in each of which one long strand of wire is bent back outside the slots at end surfaces of the stator core and wound into a wave winding so as to alternately occupy an inner layer and an outer layer in a slot depth direction within the slots a predetermined number of slots apart, and the turned portions of the strands of wire bent back outside the slots at both the end surfaces of the stator core are disposed in a circumferential direction so as to constitute a joint-side coil end and a turn-side coil end and the plurality of windings sub-portions are connected to each other on the joint-side coil end at a first end of the stator core, the average amount of application per unit area of any one of the varnish, with which the joint-side coil end is impregnated and the varnish, with which the counter-joint-side coil end is impregnated, is larger than the average amount of application per unit area of the other of the varnishes. With this construction, there can be obtained a stator for an automotive alternator in which the insulation of a joint-side coil end having no insulation film can be improved and the amount of varnish for impregnation is not unncessarily increased.

An alternator is provided with a polyphase stator winding including a number of winding portions in which long strands of wire are wound so as to alternately occupy an inner layer and an outer layer in a slot depth direction within the slots at intervals of a predetermined number of slots, the strands of wire folding back outside the slots at axial end surfaces of the stator core, and the stator core being provided with an abutting portion extending axially such that the stator core becomes an annular shape by joining ends of the stator core at the abutting portions.
