A scanning device periodically changes the direction of the transmission of an electromagnetic wave from an electromagnetic wave generating device. A first driving device operates for repetitively driving the electromagnetic wave generating device a plurality of times per one period of the change of the direction by the scanning device, and thereby for repetitively transmitting a distance measurement electromagnetic wave. A second driving device operates for, before the first driving device drives the electromagnetic wave generating device, driving the electromagnetic wave generating device and thereby transmitting a judgment electromagnetic wave having an energy smaller than that of the distance measurement electromagnetic wave. An obstacle judging device permits the first driving device to drive the electromagnetic wave generating device next in cases where a detected obstacle is absent, and inhibits the first driving device from driving the electromagnetic wave generating device next in cases where a detected obstacle is present.

Distance measurement apparatus

A system working to detect a reciprocating motion of an object such as a scanner mirror of an optical scanner. The system is designed to compensate for an error which is concluded in an amplified sensor signal used to determine a reference position of the scanner mirror and which is sensitive to a change in environmental condition of use such as a change in ambient temperature. The system also works to monitor a change in amplitude of swing of the scanner mirror accurately to keep it constant.

A magnetic-flux change-generating device 2 causes amplitude modulation of alternating magnetic flux in accordance with displacement of a movable body, and an amplitude-compensating device (low-pass filter) 4 causes attenuation of amplitude of electromagnetic-induction voltage of a pickup coil 3 substantially proportionally to frequency. When frequency of the alternating magnetic flux (also termed 'carrier frequency') fluctuates, the amplitude of the electromagnetic-induction voltage fluctuates in proportion to the frequency, but because the amplitude of the electromagnetic-induction voltage is caused to be attenuated at an attenuation rate which is substantially proportional to the frequency, displacement can be detected accurately by this amplitude change, irrespective of change in the frequency of the alternating magnetic flux (i.e., the carrier frequency of the electromagnetic-induction voltage).

A manually assistable electric driving device for a lid of an automobile luggage compartment has a clutch mechanism disposed between an electric motor and an output member drivingly connected to the lid. The clutch mechanism is so constructed that, when the lid is being driven by the motor in either direction, the lid can be manually moved in the same direction and at a speed higher than the speed caused by the motor drive.
