The invention provides a lead acid storage battery with a high utilization at a high rate discharge by incorporating a lead ion solubility adjusting agent into the electrolyte. The agent is selected from polysaccharides, chelating agents, their derivatives, and hydrazinium sulfate.

Lead acid storage battery and method for producing the same

Electrode plates for a lead-acid battery have an active material layer using polyvinylidene fluoride as a binder formed on both sides of a substrate. The substrate is selected from the group consisting of a foil-like sheet made of pure lead or lead alloy and a polyester film that is lead-plated or covered with a conductive coating layer containing carbon powder, whose main ingredient is graphite as a conducting agent. The method of manufacturing provides a thin electrode plate that is suitable for use as a spirally-wound type of electrode plate. The resulting plates have excellent high-rate discharge characteristics and long cycle life. The electrode plates are manufactured in a high productivity process that uses neither pore-forming agents nor pore-forming processes.

Electrode plates for lead-acid battery and their manufacturing method

Highly oxidized lead powder containing red lead not more than 90% is efficiently produced by maturing the lead powder material at a low temperature section of a furnace keeping the temperature less than 100.degree. C. by spraying water to the material and then, by heating the same from 400.degree. to 500.degree. C. at a high temperature section of the furnace. The highly oxidized lead powder produced in this method is preferable as active material of a lead storage battery, that is, a paste preparation and formation treatment become easy and a long life electrode is obtained.

A plate stacking and transferring apparatus includes plate stacking mechanism for continuously stacking plates. The mechanism comprises: a pair of rollers provided at the leading end of a conveyor for transporting pasted plates, for taking a plate in a gap therebetween while rotating and thus ejecting the plate, and adjusting the plate ejection angle; a collision wall for limiting the flight distance of plates; a first stacker table for receiving plates while descending; a device for registering plates stacked on the first table by repeatedly pushing the plates from the sides thereof; and a second stacker table provided below the first table. When the first table has passed the stack of plates over to the second table, another device of the stacking mechanism moves the first table to a standby position above the plate flight region, keeps it at the position, and moves it down to a position below the plate flight region during a shot so that the first table takes over the plate stacking. The apparatus also includes a transferring mechanism which comprises stays that are movable up and down, and a flat board having holes for receiving the stays. The mechanism transfers stacks of plates from the stays to the flat board at one time, and from the flat board to the stays by the reverse operation, thereby facilitating transportation of the stacks of plates for the next operation.

Apparatus for transferring and stocking lead plates for storage batteries

A battery plate for lead acid storage batteries using a grid prepared by expanding a lead-calcium-tin (Pb--Ca--Sn) alloy sheet, is made by expanding a Pb--Ca--Sn alloy sheet having a tensile strength of 6.0 kg/mm.sup.2 or lower and an Sn content of 0.6-1.8% by weight to make a grid,filling this grid with an active material paste, and then aging the grid to increase the tensile strength of the expanded grid to 7.0 kg/mm.sup.2 or higher. The workability in expanding of the Pb--Ca--Sn alloy sheet can be improved and furthermore, concentration of stress strain on the nodes of the grid can be inhibited and thus, corrosion of the nodes can be inhibited. The aging can provide a battery pate having a high tensile strength and a lead acid storage battery having an excellent charge-discharge cycle life characteristics.

Method of making battery plates for lead acid storage batteries

This invention relates to a method and apparatus to continuously manufacture red lead which is a primary material used to produce storage batteries, anticorrosion paint, glass, etc. In this method, lead monoxide and metal lead powder are continuously supplied from an inlet of a rotating inner cylinder which acts as a reaction chamber of a rotary kiln. The powder mixture proceeds toward the outlet of the kiln while it is oxidized into red lead. The yield of red lead, and the stable oxidation of raw material into red lead, can be accomplished by returning a part of the product powder available at the outlet to the inlet of the kiln.

The present invention provides a process for producing a grid for use in lead acid batteries which comprises superposing, on a sheet bar of a lead-calcium alloy, a sheet or a foil of a lead-silver-tin alloy consisting of 0.01-1.0% by weight of tin and a residual quantity of lead and having a thickness smaller than that of the sheet bar, pressure-bonding both the materials by cold rolling to prepare an elementary sheet, and subjecting the elementary sheet to an expanding process or a punching process. The grid obtained according to the process of the invention is improved in the charge-discovery characteristics after overdischarging and standing and does not deteriorate the maintenance-free characteristic of lead-calcium-tin alloy.

Grid for use in lead acid batteries and process for producing same

A paste type lead storage battery having a grid constituted by a grid base formed of a lead-calcium alloy and a layer of lead-antimony-stannum alloy roll-bonded integrally to the grid base on at least one side thereof. Preferably, the grid is formed by expanding a sheet of base material to which the alloy layer is integrally roll-bonded. Portions of the base and the alloy layer that serve as a active material support are both in contact with a paste-like active material, and antimony and stannum coexist in the alloy layer. The charge restoration after standing in a discharged state and the lifetime during cycles of charge and discharge including heavy discharge are thereby improved.

Lead-acid battery having a grid base of a lead-calcium alloy and a layer

The present invention provides a process for producing a grid for use in lead acid batteries which comprises superposing a sheet or a foil of a lead alloy on a sheet bar composed of a lead-calcium alloy, said sheet or foil of lead alloy having a composition different from that of the sheet bar and having a thickness smaller than that of the sheet bar, followed by integrating the two materials by cold rolling process to form an elementary sheet and then subjecting the elementary sheet to an expanding or punching processing. The grid obtained according to this process is improved in the charging recovery characteristics after standing in a superdischarged state and in the corrosion resistance of grid at high temperatures without deteriorating the maintenance-free characteristics of the lead-calcium alloy itself.

Process for producing a grid for use in lead acid batteries

A method for fabricating an electrode for use in lead storage batteries in which an aqueous emulsion of a silicone capable of forming an elastic, porous matrix on breaking of the emulsion, is contacted with a finely divided active electrode material at the stage of preparing an electrode paste, or after formation as an electrode. The contacted material is dried, so that the elastic, porous silicone matrix formed in association with and in intimate contact with the finely divided active electrode material. An aqueous dispersion of fluorocarbon resin can be further added to the paste, or an electrode having a fibrous network of fluorocarbon resin can be applied with the silicone emulsion. Fine particles obtained from the silicone emulsion can also be applied to a finely divided active electrode material.
