A particulate accumulation amount estimating system is configured to accurately estimate an amount of particulate matter accumulated in a particulate filter based on the pressure difference across the particulate filter even when ash is accumulated in the particulate filter. The particulate accumulation amount estimating system is configured to estimate a particulate accumulation amount of particulate matter accumulated in the particulate filter based on a pressure difference that was detected across the particulate filter and an effective area change of the particulate filter that was detected due to the accumulation of ash in the particulate filter. The estimate of the particulate accumulation amount based on the pressure difference across the filter will be lower as the estimate value of the ash accumulation amount becomes larger.

Particulate accumulation amount estimating system

An exhaust gas purification device () comprises: first and second catalyst carriers () interposed in an exhaust passage () of an engine (), which purify an exhaust gas; a case () provided in the exhaust passage, which houses the first and second catalyst carriers () in series in an exhaust gas flow direction; an annular carrier holder () interposed between the first and second catalyst carriers (), which holds the first and second catalyst carriers () via a buffering member () and has an opening () which connects an inner peripheral side and an outer peripheral side; a sensor () which detects the state of the exhaust gas flowing through the interior of the case (); and a sensor attachment portion () provided in the case (), which connects the interior and exterior of the case () in an orientation that is substantially orthogonal to the exhaust gas flow direction. The sensor attachment portion () is provided in a position corresponding to the opening () when the carrier holder () is housed in the case.

Exhaust gas purification device

An exhaust gas purification apparatus for an automotive internal combustion engine. The apparatus comprises a casing that forms a part of an exhaust gas passage of the engine. A substrate, disposed in the casing, carries a substrate to purify exhaust gas. A supporting mat is provided to support the substrate in the casing by being located between the substrate and the casing. The supporting mat has a depression to trap foreign matters at an upstream-side end of the supporting mat, the upstream-side end facing upstream side of exhaust gas flow in the exhaust gas passage.

Exhaust gas purification apparatus

An exhaust manifold of an engine exhaust apparatus includes a plurality of exhaust branches and a straight pipe section. The exhaust branches extend toward a confluence portion, from respective upstream ends to be connected with cylinders of an engine. The straight pipe section extends from the confluence portion toward a downstream end adapted to be connected to an exhaust purifying catalyst.

Engine exhaust apparatus

For resiliently and safely supporting a monolith in a housing, a supporting structure is proposed. An annular seat structure is defined in the housing. An annular resilient washer is made of wire mesh and is put on the annular seat structure for supporting thereon a circular peripheral edge of the monolith. A biasing structure biases the monolith toward the annular resilient washer to compress the washer. The washer has a generally rectangular cross section and has a chamfered surface around a circular outer surface thereof. The chamfered surface is positioned radially outside the circular peripheral edge of the monolith. With this, even when compressed by the monolith, the washer is prevented from producing a biasing force for pulling the circular peripheral edge of the monolith radially outward, and thus, damage of the edge is suppressed.

Monolith supporting structure for use in catalytic converter

A catalytic converter for purifying exhaust gas discharged from an automotive internal combustion engine. The catalytic converter comprises a casing in which a monolithic catalyst carrier is disposed. An annular cap is fixedly disposed inside the casing and located generally coaxial with the monolithic catalyst carrier. The annular cap is located near an end face of the monolithic catalyst carrier. The cap includes annular bottom, inner and outer walls. The inner and outer walls are separate from each other and extend from the bottom wall. The inner wall is located radially inward of the outer wall. The bottom, inner and outer walls are arranged generally U-shaped in cross-section so as to form a groove. Additionally, an annular elastic washer is coaxially disposed within the groove of the annular cap. The elastic washer is disposed in press contact with the end face of the monolithic catalyst carrier to axially elastically support the monolithic catalyst carrier. The annular elastic washer is an annular molded structure of wire mesh. The annular elastic washer has an inner peripheral face which has a diameter larger than a diameter of an outer peripheral surface of the inner wall of the cap so as to form a clearance between the elastic washer and the inner wall of the cap in a state where the elastic washer is assembled in the casing upon being compressed.

Catalytic converter

A fuel delivery control apparatus for use with an internal combustion engine including an exhaust system having a catalytic converter containing catalysts operable at a temperature for purifying exhaust gases discharged through the exhaust system. A fuelcut control is performed to interrupt fuel delivery to the engine during engine deceleration. The fuelcut control is inhibited when the catalyst temperature exceeds a predetermined value.

Fuel delivery control apparatus for use with internal combustion engine

A catalyst for exhaust gas purification has at least one monolith carrier, at least one first catalyst layer having a three-way catalytic activity, provided on the carrier, and a second catalyst layer having a hydrocarbon purification activity, provided on the first catalyst layer. In a gasoline engine automobile provided with the above catalyst for exhaust gas purification in the exhaust gas system, the hydrocarbons present in the exhaust gas can be converted at a high efficiency by introducing secondary air into the exhaust gas in front of the catalyst to make the exhaust gas lean, at the engine start when a large amount of unburnt hydrocarbons are present in the exhaust gas. Further, the engine warm-up property of the automobile can be improved by the heat generated by the catalytic reaction of the hydrocarbons. The catalyst further exhibits a three-way catalytic activity even during the steady state engine operation after warm-up.
