A solid end mill is provided which can prolong the useful life of the tool, without any adhesion to the work material, even aluminum or similar material, during a or cutting or drilling operation. The solid end mill includes a chip discharge flute, which is formed in the outer periphery of a nearly cylindrical tool main body. The nearly cylindrical tool main body rotates around a central longitudinal axis. A cutting edge is formed at a ridge portion on the outer periphery of the tool main body. The cutting edge is adjacent to a wall surface constituting a rake face of the chip discharge flute. The rake face faces in the tool rotational direction. A convex portion may be formed so as to be adjacent to and raised from a concavely curved portion. The concavely curved portion stretches to the cutting edge and is formed between the flute bottom of the chip discharge flute and the cutting edge.

Solid end mill

A coated cemented carbide endmill comprises a tungsten carbide based cemented carbide substrate comprising 5-20% Co as a binder phase forming component, optionally 0.1-2% of Cr and/or V as a binder phase forming component, optionally 0.1-5% of one or more of (Ti, Ta, Nb, Zr) C&middot;N as a dispersed phase forming component, and the balance being WC as the dispersed phase forming component and inevitable impurities. The WC has a fine grained structure having an average grain size of 0.1-1.5 &mgr;m, the cemented carbide substrate has a reaction-created surface layer formed on the surface portion thereof which is formed by heating at high temperature and in which Co,W,C is distributed over a thickness of 0.1-2 &mgr;m thereof, and further the substrate has coated layers composed of a Ti compound layer. Optionally, an Al,O,layer is formed thereon with an average layer thickness of 0.5-4.5 &mgr;m, the Ti compound layer being composed of one or more layers of TiC, TiN, TiCN, TiCO, TiNO and TiCNO using MT-CVD and the Al,O,layer is formed using MT-CVD or HT-CVD. The hard-material-coated layers of the endmill have excellent adhesion.

In a cutting insert, a base plate is formed into a polygonal configuration having a plurality of corners. At least one cutting-edge element is mounted on an upper surface of the corner of the base plate. The cutting-edge element is composed of a high-hardness sintered section and a super-hard sintered section which are superimposed one upon the other. The cutting-edge element is brazed to the upper surface of the corner of the base plate under such a condition that the super-hard sintered section is exposed to an upper surface of the base plate. The super-hard sintered section has its upper surface which is formed therein with a chip breaker having a surface roughness within a range of from 0.5S to 10S. Furthermore, in a polygonal cutting insert having a plurality of corners which have formed therein respective chip breakers, at least one of the chip breakers is different in form from the remaining chip breakers.
