A multi-feed detection apparatus may include an ultrasonic transmission unit, arranged on one side of a conveyance path configured to convey a sheet-like member, for transmitting an ultrasonic wave toward the conveyance path, an ultrasonic reception unit, arranged on the other side of the conveyance path, for receiving the ultrasonic wave from the ultrasonic transmission unit, and a multi-feed determination unit for determining, based on the reception result of the ultrasonic wave received by the ultrasonic reception unit, whether multi-feed of sheet-like members has occurred. The ultrasonic transmission surface of the ultrasonic transmission unit is inclined with respect to the conveyance path, and the ultrasonic reception surface of the ultrasonic reception unit is arranged to be almost parallel to the conveyance path.

An image sensor reads an original image via a contact member which the conveyed original may contact. A cleaning member, being provided on a turning member which is able to rotate or swing and disposed at a position opposing the image sensor, cleans the contact member's surface which the original may contact. The turning member is turned by a driving unit. A controlling unit controls the driving unit to turn the turning member so that cleaning of the contact member is performed by the cleaning member after the original has passed an image reading position of the image sensor and before a subsequent original reaches the image reading position.

An image reading apparatus capable of increasing the detection accuracy of the size of an original and eliminating the need for an image sensor dedicated to detection of the size of an original. A first reading unit has a first light source disposed on one side of a conveyance path of an original for emitting light to one surface of the original. A second reading unit has a second light source disposed on the other side of the conveyance path for emitting light to be received by the first reading unit, an optical opening for causing the light emitted from the second light source and subsequently received by the first reading unit to pass therethrough toward the first reading unit. This invention has as its object to provide a highly reliable image reading apparatus in which both an image reading unit and photographing unit can obtain optimal images. A sheet feeding apparatus has a pair of feeding roller and separating roller an inter-shaft distance changing mechanism for the pair of rollers, and sheet detecting means, and a sheet fed is rammed against the surface on which the feeding roller and the separating roller overlap each other to thereby correct skew feeding, and the feeding roller and the separating roller are moved away from each other to thereby feed the sheet. A feeding rotatable member, a conveying rotatable member and a separating rotatable member are driven by a sheet feeding motor, a feeding motor and a separating motor, respectively, which are independent driving means to thereby feed an original. The separation and conveyance of the original are effected while the opening amount between the conveying rotatable member and the separating rotatable member is changed by a sheet thickness adjusting motor.

With the structure thus arranged, it is possible to establish the binalizing reference value of the photosensors accurately even when the fluctuation of the luminous energy of the light source occurs as well as to correctly establish the reference value reliably even when the base density of the film varies.
