In general, it is difficult for the end user to implement a simulate illustration process for an image, since manual setups of the process are complicated and require skills. Also, there is room for improvement in terms of image quality. In this invention, the luminance histogram of an original image is generated, the brightness of that image is detected based on the histogram, and the image undergoes a filter process corresponding to the detected brightness, thus easily performing the simulate illustration process using bright tone for the image. Especially, since a filter is set for rasterized image data in correspondence with the number of lines of the data to be processed, an effective simulate illustration process can be implemented.

A printer is a peripheral device capable of being controlled by a host computer. The printer has a silent function for silent operation. If a silent function is determined to be enabled and if a time period for enabling a silent function is set, a host computer determines whether a current time is within the time period or not. An apparatus for outputting image data to a printer that includes a generator, a determining device, a compression device, a storage controller and a transfer device. The generator generates the image data and the determining device determines whether or not a band or a page of the image data generated by the generator is to be compressed, on the basis of an amount of the generated image data to be transferred to the printer. The compression device compresses the image data generated by the generator into compressed data by a band unit or a page unit, in accordance with a determination from the determining device. The storage controller, if the determining device determines that the band or page of the generated image data is to be compressed, controls a memory to store the band or page of the generated image data compressed by the compression device, and, if the determining device determines that the band or page of the generated image data is not to be compressed, controls the memory to store the band or page of the generated image data without compression. The transfer device transfers the stored data from the memory to the printer.

A print apparatus includes a size detection unit for detecting the size of a recording medium by detecting the front and rear edges and right and left edges of an input recording medium, a correction unit for correcting the size detected by the size detection unit on the basis of a plurality of pieces of pre-stored correction information, and a control unit for controlling the page layout on the recording medium in correspondence with the size corrected by the correction unit.

Print apparatus and method

A color printing apparatus for printing information data as well as overlay data. A data receiving means receives information data and overlay data, and a notifying device notifies an operator that overlay printing is to be performed. A manual overlay color setting device manually sets a printing color of the overlay data received by the data receiving device. The manual overlay color device is used to set the desired color in which the overlay data is to be printed by over-riding instructions from a computer for overlay color selection. A printing device prints the overlay data based on the color defined by the manual overlay color setting device and the information data received by the data receiving device.
