Provided is a valve seat insert for an internal combustion engine, which has both an excellent heat dissipation property and excellent wear resistance. The valve seat insert for an internal combustion engine is used while being press-fitted into an aluminum alloy cylinder head, is made of an iron-based sintered alloy, is formed by integrating two layers of a functional member side layer and a supporting member side layer, and has a plating film on at least an outer peripheral side. The plating film is preferably a copper plating film. The plating film is a plating film having a thickness of 1 to 100 &#x3bc;m and a hardness of 50 to 300 HV, and the hardness of the plating film is adjusted so as to satisfy a range of 1.05 to 4.5 times hardness of the cylinder head in Vickers hardness HV. Pores contained in the valve seat insert are preferably sealed with a curable resin before plating treatment. Consequently, a valve seat insert for an internal combustion engine which does not go through complicated processes, is not accompanied by a significant decrease in wear resistance compared with the prior art, and has an excellent heat dissipation property is provided. If a roughened surface region is further formed at at least one portion on the outer peripheral surface of the valve seat insert in addition to the plating film, a falling out resistance property is improved. The same effect can be obtained even if the valve seat insert is a single layer of only the functional member side layer.

Iron-based sintered alloy valve seat for internal combustion engine

Provided are a coating film, a manufacturing method for the same, and a PVD device that not only sufficiently improve the balance of low-friction properties and wear resistance, but also improve chipping resistance and peeling resistance. This film is coated on a substrate surface, wherein the coating film has a hard carbon that presents relatively black and white when observed in a cross-sectional bright-field TEM image, a mesh-shaped hard carbon layer is formed using a PVD method, said layer having white-colored hard carbon in a mesh shape extending in the thickness direction and black-colored hard carbon dispersed into the cavities in the mesh, and the ID/IG ratio is 1-6 when the mesh-shaped hard carbon layer is measured using Raman spectroscopy, said ratio being the ratio of the Raman spectrum D band peak area intensity and G band peak area intensity.

Coating film, manufacturing method for same, and PVD device

A sliding member includes: a base; a chromium-based hard chromium plated layer formed on the surface of the base; a hard carbon layer that is mainly composed of carbon element and is formed on the hard chromium plated layer. The hydrogen concentration of the hard chromium plated layer is equal to or less than 150 mass ppm. A method for producing the sliding member involves heating the surface of the base on which the chromium-based hard chromium plated layer has been formed at a temperature of 250&#xb0; C. or more so that the hydrogen concentration of the hard chromium plated layer is equal to or less than 150 mass ppm, and thereafter forming the hard carbon layer mainly composed of carbon element on the hard chromium plated layer.

Sliding member and method for producing same

Provided are a coating film, a manufacturing method for the same, and a PVD device that not only sufficiently improve the balance of low-friction properties and wear resistance, but also improve chipping resistance (defect resistance) and peeling resistance. This coating film coats a substrate surface, wherein a hard carbon layer is formed extending in columns-shape perpendicular to the substrate when observed in a cross-sectional bright-field TEM image, the hard carbon layer is formed using a PVD method, and the ID/IG ratio is 1-6 when the hard carbon layer is measured using Raman spectroscopy, said ratio being the ratio of the Raman spectrum D band peak area intensity and G band peak area intensity.

The second compression ring is formed such that the outer peripheral surface shape has a tapered face, and the radial cross-sectional shape is a rectangular ring, a scraper ring, or a Napier ring, and has a piston ring base and a hard film provided at least on an outer peripheral sliding surface thereof. The piston ring base is composed of a low-alloy steel or carbon steel having a Vickers hardness of Hv 350 Hv 550. The outer peripheral sliding surface is formed so that the axial length is from 0.01 to 0.30 mm between the outer edge end part of the tapered outer peripheral sliding surface and an imaginary line contacting with a lower end surface where a curved surface having a diameter that decreases gradually inward from the outer edge end part toward the lower end in the axial direction is parallel to a ring underside.

Piston ring

A piston ring includes: a refined steel including: carbon C in a range of 0.20% mass to 0.90% mass, silicon Si in a range of 0.10% mass to less than 0.60% mass, manganese Mn in a range of 0.20% mass to 1.50% mass, chromium Cr in a range of 0.30% mass to 2.00% mass, and a remnant including: iron Fe, and an unavoidable impurity. A parameter A calculated from the following expression (1) based on contents of the Si, Mn and Cr is 9.0 or less: parameter A=8.8 Si+1.6 Mn+1.7 Cr&#x2014;expression (1). A parameter B calculated from the following expression (2) based on contents of the C, Si, Mn and Cr is 10.8 or more: parameter B=36 C+4.2 Si+3.8 Mn+4.5 Cr&#x2014;expression (2).

A combination of a cylinder liner and a piston ring, wherein the cylinder liner includes, silicon: 23.0-28.0% by weight, magnesium: 0.80-2.0% by weight, copper: 3.0-4.5% by weight, iron: 0.25% by weight or less, nickel: 0.01% by weight or less, wherein surface roughness profile of the inner circumference surface has Rz=0.5 to 1.0 &#x3bc;m, Rk=0.2 to 0.4 &#x3bc;m, Rpk=0.05 to 0.1 &#x3bc;m, Rvk=0.08 to 0.2 &#x3bc;m, wherein the piston ring includes carbon: 0.6-0.7% by weight, chrome: 13-14% by weight, molybdenum: 0.2-0.4% by weight, silicon: 0.25-0.50% by weight, manganese: 0.2-0.5% by weight, and wherein carbides with the diameter of 5.0 &#x3bc;m and less are 4-10%.

Combination of a cylinder liner and a piston ring

A piston ring having a stainless steel base material, the base material having an upper surface, a lower surface, an inner circumferential surface and an outer circumferential surface, the surfaces each having a nitride layer formed thereon, the nitride layer each first being formed to have a compound layer and a diffusion layer, the diffusion layer of the outer circumferential surface then being exposed by removing the compound layer of the outer circumferential surface, the exposed diffusion layer thereafter having an ion-plating deposition layer of hard ceramic formed thereon, the piston ring wherein the exposed diffusion layer is entirely removed on the upper and lower corners of the upper and lower surface and the outer circumferential surface by chamfering corner regions of the nitride layer located around the upper and lower corners before the ion-plating deposition layer is formed.

According to an embodiment of the present invention a piston ring for internal combustion engines for use with a piston and a cylinder, is provided that has an external circumferential sliding surface adapted to slid against the internal wall of the cylinder. The piston ring has an ion-plating deposition layer formed over the externtal circumferential sliding surface, the deposition layer having pores and being made of a mixture of a first chromium nitride of CrN type and a second chromium nitride of Cr N type. The mixing ratios in the mixture are more than 45.5 and less than 98.0 weight percent for the first chromium nitride and the balance portion for the second chromium nitride. According to another embodiment of the present invention, a piston ring for internal combustion engines for use with a piston and a cylinder, is provided that has an external circumferential sliding surface adapted to slid against the internal wall of the cylinder. The piston ring having an ion-plating deposition layer formed over the external circumferential sliding surface thereof, the deposition layer having pores and being made of a mixture of a first chromium nitride of CrN type, a second chromium nitride of Cr N type, and metallic chromium. The mixing ratios in the mixture are more than 45.0 and less than 98.0 weight percent for the first chromium nitride, more than 0.5 and not more than 15.0 weight percent for the metallic chromium, and the balance portion for the second chromium nitride. According to a further embodiment of the present invention, the ion-plating deposition layer formed over the external circumferential sliding surface of the piston ring, made of the mixture described in the above embodiments, is formed to have porosity of more than 0.5 and not more than 20.0 percent.

Nitride-plated piston ring for internal combustion engines

An improved sliding member is provided that has a sliding surface and a deposition layer formed on the sliding surface utilizing an ion-plating method, wherein the deposition layer is composed mainly of chrome nitride, including CrN. The CrN of the chrome nitride has a preferred orientation of plane &lcub;111&rcub; and contains boron in an amount of not less than 0.05 and not more than 20 weight percent. The deposition layer further contains oxygen and/or carbon in an amount of not more than 15 weight percent. The improved sliding member exhibits excellent abrasion and scuff resistance and enhanced peeling resistance.

Sliding member

An object of the present invention is to provide a sliding member which is coated a film having superior wear resistance, superior scuffing resistance and a superior property not to increase an amount of wear on an opponent material (an opponent attacking property). This object can be achieved by providing a sliding member coated by a Cr&mdash;B&mdash;N alloy film,on an outer surface,thereof. In this case, it is preferable that the Cr&mdash;B&mdash;N alloy film is formed through a physical vapor deposition, particularly ion plating, vacuum deposition, or sputtering. Further, it is preferable that the boron (B) content is within the range of 0.05-20 wt.%. Since the Cr&mdash;B&mdash;N alloy film,formed on the outer surface,of the sliding member has superior wear resistance, superior scuffing resistance and a superior opponent attacking property, it is possible to provide the sliding member which satisfies demand characteristics even when the sliding member are subjected to the harsh operating environments. Further, it is preferable that nitriding layer,is formed on a whole surface or at least an outer surface,of the sliding member, and the Cr&mdash;B&mdash;N alloy film,is covered on the nitriding layer

A laminated chromium plating layers providing improved wear resistance and fatigue strength for use in mechanical parts of an internal combustion engine. The lamination is formed on a base body and contains a plurality of high hardness chromium plating layer and a plurality of low hardness chromium plating layer, and each high hardness chromium plating layer is formed upon each low hardness chromium plating layer to provide the lamination of alternating high hardness chromium plating layer and low hardness chromium plating layer.

Laminated chromium plating layers having superior wear resistance and fatigue strength

According to an embodiment of the present invention, an improved sliding member is provided that has a sliding surface and a deposition layer formed on the sliding surface by means of an ion-plating method, where the deposition layer is composed mainly of CrN. The improvement comprises the CrN which has a preferred orientation of the plane &lcub;110&rcub;, where the deposition layer contains boron at a containing ratio not less than 0.05 and not more than 20 weight percent. According to another embodiment of the present invention, an improved sliding member is provided that has a sliding surface and a deposition layer formed on the sliding surface by means of an ion-plating method, where the deposition layer is composed mainly of CrN. The improvement comprises the CrN which has a preferred orientation of the plane &lcub;110&rcub;, where the deposition layer contains boron, at a containing ratio not less than 0.05 and not more than 20 weight percent, and either one or both of oxygen and carbon, at a containing ratio of the either one of oxygen and carbon, or a total containing ratio of both oxygen and carbon, not more than 15 weight percent, respectively. With an improved sliding member obtained by the arrangement as above, according to the present invention, enhanced abrasion resistance and scuffing resistance are obtained that are better than those of the conventional sliding members having an ion-plating deposition layer not containing boron, with the CrN having the preferred orientation of the plane &lcub;110&rcub;, while maintaining the peeling resistance as excellent as with conventional sliding members having an ion-plating deposition layer not containing boron, with the CrN having the preferred orientation of the plane &lcub;110&rcub;.

With an improved sliding member obtained by the arrangement as above, according to the present invention, enhanced abrasion resistance and scuffing resistance are obtained that are better than those of the conventional sliding members having an ion-plating deposition layer not containing boron, with the CrN having the preferred orientation of the plane &lcub;100&rcub;, while maintaining the peeling resistance as excellent as with conventional sliding members having an ion-plating deposition layer not containing boron, with the CrN having the preferred orientation of the plane &lcub;100&rcub;.
