A seating detector comprises a plurality of cells provided at a seating surface to be defined by rows and columns for detecting partial loads, an unevenness calculating means for calculating the number of cells when a partial pressure detected at the each cell is larger than a partial pressure detected at one abutting cell positioned next to the cell at one side thereof and a partial pressure detected at the other abutting cell positioned next to the cell at the other side thereof, or when a partial pressure detected at the each cell is smaller than a partial pressure detected at one abutting cell positioned next to the cell at one side thereof and a partial pressure detected at the other abutting cell positioned next to the cell at the other side thereof, and a determining means for determining that the seat is occupied by a child restraint system based on a comparison between the number of the cells and a threshold.

An occupant detecting device comprises plural cells provided at a seating part of a vehicle seat and defined by an array of rows in a width direction of the vehicle seat and columns in a cross direction of the vehicle seat for detecting partial pressures of the seating part, a total pressure value calculating means for obtaining a total pressure value by summing up the detected partial pressures, a determining means for determining a condition of the vehicle seat on which an adult passenger is sitting based on a comparison result between the obtained total pressure value and a determining value threshold, a temperature sensor for detecting temperature, and a correcting means for correcting at least one of either the total pressure value calculated based on the detected temperature or the determining value threshold.

The invention is directed to a vehicle passenger restraint system having a restraint device for protecting a passenger in a vehicle. The system includes an acceleration sensor for sensing an acceleration of the vehicle, and an A/D converter for converting an output of the acceleration sensor into a digital signal indicative of the acceleration of the vehicle. A wavelet transform processor transforms the output of the A/D converter by a wavelet function into a wavelet coefficient. The wavelet function is provided on the basis of a mother wavelet function localized in time, scaled in response to a scale parameter, and shifted in response to a shift parameter indicative of a time localization. A speed variation computing unit sets a first condition when the wavelet coefficient transformed by the wavelet transform processor exceeds a predetermined value, and integrates the output of the A/D converter for a predetermined period to provide a speed variation. And, an actuator sets a second condition when the speed variation provided by the speed variation computing unit exceeds a predetermined level. Then, the actuator actuates the restraint device when both of the first and second conditions are set. The wavelet transform processor may be performed in accordance with the Infinite Impulse Response.

Vehicle passenger restraint system

The invention is directed to a method and apparatus for detecting a tire inflation pressure of a vehicle tire. The apparatus includes a device for producing an oscillating electric signal having a vibration frequency component of the vehicle tire. A wavelet transformer transforms the oscillating electric signal by a wavelet function into a wavelet coefficient. The wavelet function is provided on the basis of a mother wavelet function localized in time, scaled in response to a scale parameter, and shifted in response to a shift parameter indicative of a time localization. Then, an extracting device extracts a resonance frequency from the vibration frequency component of the vehicle tire on the basis of the wavelet coefficient, and an estimating device estimates the tire inflation pressure on the basis of the resonance frequency. The apparatus may further include a warning device for warning a decrease of the tire inflation pressure when the resonance frequency decreases to an extent that a difference between the resonance frequency and the reference frequency exceeds a predetermined frequency.
