Methods for preparing supported chromium catalysts containing a chromium (III) compound and an activator-support are disclosed. These supported chromium catalysts can be used in catalyst compositions for the polymerization of olefins to produce polymers having low levels of long chain branching, and with greater sensitivity to the presence of hydrogen during polymerization.

Chromium (III) catalyst systems with activator-supports

A method comprising a) calcining a silica support at temperature in the range of from about 100&#xb0; C. to about 500&#xb0; C. to form a precalcined silica support; b) contacting the precalcined silica support with a titanium alkoxide to form a titanated support; c) subsequent to b), contacting the titanated support with a polyol to form a polyol associated titanated support (PATS); d) contacting at least one of the silica support, pre-calcined silica support, the titanated support, the PATS, or combinations thereof with a chromium-containing compound to form a polymerization catalyst precursor; e) drying the polymerization catalyst precursor to form a dried polymerization catalyst precursor; and f) calcining the dried polymerization catalyst precursor to produce a polymerization catalyst, wherein less than about 0.1 wt. % of a highly reactive volatile organic compound (HRVOC) is emitted during the calcining of the dried polymerization catalyst precursor.

Methods of preparing a catalyst

A method comprising contacting a support material with a transition metal compound to produce a mixture; thermally treating the mixture in the presence of oxygen at a temperature in a range of from about 100&#xb0; C. to about 500&#xb0; C. for a period of from about 1 hour to about 10 hours, wherein at least a portion of the transition metal sublimes onto the support material to produce a support material comprising a dispersed transition metal; and thermally treating the support material comprising the dispersed transition metal in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature in a range of from about 550&#xb0; C. to about 900&#xb0; C. for a period of from about 1 hour to about 10 hours to produce a polymerization catalyst.

Polymerization catalysts and polymers

A method of preparing a catalyst comprising contacting an acidic colloidal silica suspension with a titanium-containing compound to form a mixture, adjusting the pH of mixture to about neutral to form a catalyst support, and contacting the catalyst support with chromium-containing compound to from a chromium-supported catalyst. A catalyst support prepared by contacting a colloidal silica suspension and a titanium-containing compound under acidic conditions to form a mixture, and contacting the mixture with a basic material in an amount sufficient to increase the pH of the mixture to about 7.

A method comprising contacting a silica support material with a sulfating agent to form a sulfated silica support material comprising sulfate anions; thermally treating the sulfated silica support material to form a thermally treated sulfated silica support material; contacting the thermally treated sulfated silica support material with a chromium-containing compound to form a mixture; and thermally treating the mixture to form a polymerization catalyst. A method comprising thermally treating a silica support material to form a thermally-treated silica support material; contacting the thermally-treated silica support material with a sulfating agent to form a thermally treated sulfated silica support material; thermally treating the thermally treated sulfated silica support material to form a processed silica support material; contacting the processed silica support material with a chromium-containing compound to form a precursor polymerization catalyst; and thermally treating the precursor polymerization catalyst to form a polymerization catalyst.

Methods of preparing a polymerization catalyst

A polymer having a long chain branching content peaking at greater than about 20 long chain branches per million carbon atoms, and a polydispersity index of greater than about 10 wherein the long chain branching decreases to approximately zero at the higher molecular weight portion of the molecular weight distribution. A polymer having a long chain branching content peaking at greater than about 8 long chain branches per million carbon atoms, a polydispersity index of greater than about 20 wherein the long chain branching decreases to approximately zero at the higher molecular weight portion of the molecular weight distribution. A polymer having a long chain branching content peaking at greater than about 1 long chain branches per chain, and a polydispersity index of greater than about 10 wherein the long chain branching decreases to approximately zero at the higher molecular weight portion of the molecular weight distribution.

Long chain branched polymers and methods of making same

Methods for the preparation of fluorided-chlorided silica-coated alumina activator-supports are disclosed. These activator-supports can be used in catalyst systems for the production of olefin-based polymers, such as polyethylene and polypropylene.

Methods for producing fluorided-chlorided silica-coated alumina activator-supports and catalyst systems containing the same

Catalyst deactivating agents and compositions containing catalyst deactivating agents are disclosed. These catalyst deactivating agents can be used in methods of controlling polymerization reactions, methods of terminating polymerization reactions, methods of operating polymerization reactors, and methods of transitioning between catalyst systems.

Methods for the vapor phase preparation of fluorided solid oxide activator-supports, using certain calcining temperatures and fluoriding temperatures, are disclosed.

Vapor phase preparation of fluorided solid oxides

Systems and methods for the maintenance of active chromium-based catalysts and their use in polymerization processes are described. In one embodiment, a system for the introduction of multiple polymerization components to activate a chromium based catalyst within a mix tank is described. Other described features may include materials and methods to purify the liquid medium of a catalyst slurry so that the catalyst slurry maintains a high level of activity. The active chromium-based catalyst may provide polyolefins with a number of desirable properties in a reliable, consistent, and predictable manner.

Disclosed herein are polymerization processes for the production of olefin polymers. These polymerization processes use a catalyst system containing at least two activator-supports. One activator-support is a halided solid oxide, and the other activator-support is a sulfated solid oxide and/or phosphated solid oxide.

A method comprising reducing a polymerization catalyst comprising Cr(VI) to form a polymerization catalyst comprising Cr(II), and treating the polymerization catalyst comprising Cr(II) with hydrogen.

Methods for controlling properties of an olefin polymer using a Group VIII transition metal-modified activator-support are disclosed. The melt index of the polymer can be decreased and the molecular weight of the polymer can be increased via the addition of the transition metal-modified activator-support to the polymerization reactor system.
