A networking system comprising a plurality of content routers coupled to each other and to a plurality of providers and configured to route and cache content data, wherein the content routers are further configured to locate and route requested content to a user node coupled to the content routers, wherein the providers are configured to publish content and the content routers are further configured to receive and cache the content data in response to an interest request for content and to flood a content identifier for the content data to a plurality of neighboring content routers within a specified radius, wherein the content identifier enables the plurality of neighboring content routers to determine a nearest location from which to obtain the content data to enable efficient content routing.

A network device identifies a non-adaptive flow as follows. The network device drops packets on a random basis using a Random Early Detection (RED) algorithm. A classifier reads indicia of a flow from at least one field of a header of a packet received by the network device. The network device calculates a drop interval for packets of the flow dropped by the RED algorithm, in response to a time at which the packets were dropped. The network device then applies a statistical test to drop intervals of a plurality of flows in order to identify the non-adaptive flow.

A Random Early Detection (RED) policer in accordance with the invention does not tail-drop arriving packets as being non-conforming. For instance, because the RED policer uses a running estimate such as an exponential weighted moving average (EWMA), for example, it allows the policer to absorb traffic bursts. The policer uses randomization in choosing which packets to drop; with this method, the probability of dropping a packet from a particular sending node is roughly proportional to the node's bandwidth share, hence the packets of different flows are fairly dropped.

A method and apparatus for providing differentiated services using a multi-level queuing mechanism includes checking whether a packet of data is to receive a preferred level of service, and if the packet is not to receive the preferred level of service, then placing the packet in a first forwarding queue. However, if the packet of data is to receive the preferred level of service then checking whether it is permissible to forward the packet to a device in the network at the current time. If it is permissible to forward the packet to the device at the current time, then placing the packet in a second forwarding queue, otherwise temporarily placing the packet in a holding queue before placing the packet in the second forwarding queue.

A two-way cable network offering high-speed broadband communications delivered via virtual private networks over a multi-channel shared media system. Bi-directional transmission of packet to ATM cell based communications is established between a head end communication controller and a number of subscriber terminal units, whereby individual cells are prioritized and routed according to a virtual connection. Virtual connections are organized to support multiple virtual private networks in a shared media CATV system. The virtual private network to which a particular STU belongs is user selectable and has the flexibility of handling multi up/downstream channels with different MAC domains. The present invention can also handle non-ATM MAC domains via the same common ATM switch. To overcome the limited number of addresses inherent to common ATM switches, a mapping/remapping function is implemented in the port cards. Furthermore, downstream as well as upstream traffic are filtered at each STU. In one embodiment, information pertaining to downstream traffic is used to implement predictive scheduling in order to improve the timing associated with the request/grant cycle. In another embodiment, a user has the ability to select a quality of service that best suits the needs of the current application. In a further embodiment, the scheduling function is associated with each of the receivers in order to provide improved scalability.
