A method and system for modifying software performance management and capacity planning is provided. The method includes presenting graphical images associated with tailoring hardware and software systems for specialized functionality. A selection and associated order for a group of images is received from a user. The specified group of images is stored with respect to the order and specialized software code associated with the group of images is generated and executed. In response, the candidate hardware and software system is tailored for specialized functionality with respect to capturing expert knowledge and best practices.

Software performance modification

In one embodiment, the invention provides a method of configuring a migration from a plurality of distributed virtual servers to a system of blades, the method comprising: identifying among the plurality of distributed virtual servers a plurality of candidate virtual servers for inclusion in the migration; collecting performance data for each candidate virtual server; consolidating the performance data for each candidate virtual server into a usage profile; normalizing the usage profile to allow representation of a statistical measure of resource usage by the candidate virtual server; and constructing a configuration for the plurality of candidate virtual servers within the system of blades.

Server migration

A dynamic capability exchange mechanism permits two processing entities to notify each other of initial properties, or processing capabilities, as well as subsequent changes to those properties or capabilities. Before requesting a service, or function, of the other entity, one entity consults a mutual characteristic field (constructed from the current properties, or characteristics) to determine if the service, or function, is jointly available. A transport layer, acting as the communication mechanism between the two entities, provides for bidirectional communications between entities including a Control Program and a Service Call Logical Processor. The transport layer provides multiplexing, priority, failure, pacing, and buffer spanning support.
