A method is provided that includes receiving a plurality of messaging signals for a user. The method further determines an elapsed time from the sending of a previous message to the user. The method also includes determining a priority order for the plurality of messaging signals, examining the plurality of messaging signals according to the priority order to identify a valid messaging signal, and sending a message to the user based on the valid messaging signal.

A method for selecting a user interface to be provided to one or more users of a social network, the method including steps for receiving edge information, wherein the edge information includes an indication of a number of social networking contacts with which a first user has connected in a social network, receiving frequency information, wherein the frequency information includes a number of times that the first user has interacted with the social network over a time duration and associating the first user with a first segment from among a plurality of segments, based on the edge information and the frequency information. In certain aspects, the method may further include steps for providing the first user with a first user interface, based on the first user's association with the first segment. Classifying social network users

The subject technology discloses configurations, for a set of unique users, processing application usage logs to determine a set of features of an application accessed by each user. A respective profile of each user is then updated based on the determined set of features accessed by the set of unique users. The subject technology determines a set of users that have lapsed in usage of an application based on a respective profile of each user. One or more previous engagement messages sent to the determined set of users are determined. The subject technology ranks a set of engagement types for each user of the determined set of users based on a set of criteria including the determined previous engagement messages. A new engagement message is generated based on a selected engagement type and then transmitted to each user of the determined set of users.

User state based engagement

Implementations generally relate to providing images with notifications. In some implementations, a method includes generating a notification to a target user in a social network system. The method also includes selecting one or more of the images associated with the notification based on one or more predefined selection criteria. The method also includes cropping one or more of the selected images based on one or more predefined cropping criteria. The method also includes causing the cropped images to be displayed with the notification.
