A thermal and/or acoustic insulation product, and an apparatus and the process for manufacturing the product. The product is based on mineral wool of the glass wool or rock wool type. The product has at least part of its external surface uncovered. The product is surface-treated over at least a portion of the external surface with a composition having softening properties and including at least one surfactant.

A phenol-formaldehyde resole resin for use as a binder for glass fibers is acidified to a pH of 3 or less after base-catalyzed resinification. An increase in actual solids is observed compared with neutralized resin. Phenol-formaldehyde-urea-ammonia resins are surprisingly stable at pH 3 with desirable cure profiles.

Method of preparing a stable, low pH phenolic resin

A phenol-formaldehyde resole resin for use as a binder for glass fibers is acidified with sulfamic acid to a pH of 3 or less after base-catalyzed resinification. An increase in actual solids observed compared with neutralized resin, reflecting a desired improvement in efficiency.
