The present invention provides compositions that enable excellent hardness in coating applications, the compositions containing one or more copolymer having as copolymerized units one or more acrylic monomer with a phosphorus acid-functional group, a polymeric side chain containing multi-acid functional groups, a salt thereof, or a combination thereof, one or more polyurethane dispersion made from a high molecular weight polyol, and one or more coalescent having a normal boiling point of 190&#xb0; C. or higher. The compositions may be ambient curable.

Aqueous polymer dispersions

An aqueous coating composition having improved adhesion to friable surfaces including an emulsion polymer of certain compositions and certain acid numbers having a glass transition temperature of &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. to 100&#xb0; C. and an average particle diameter less than 120 nanometers, and certain water-soluble ethoxylates is provided. In addition, a method for improving adhesion to friable surfaces by using the aqueous coating compositions of the invention is provided.

Aqueous coating composition with improved adhesion to friable surfaces

An aqueous coating composition having improved adhesion to friable surfaces is provided. The aqueous coating composition includes a plurality of polymeric particles having a particle size of less than 120 nanometers, and containing at least two polymers, one of which contains, as polymerized units, acid functional monomers, water soluble monomers, or both. Optionally, the aqueous coating composition includes a nonionic surfactant. In addition, a method for improving adhesion to friable surfaces by using the aqueous coating compositions of the invention is provided.

The open time of a cementitious composition, such as a grout, may be increased by the incorporating therein, as a binder, a polymer composition comprising a film-forming copolymer formed by polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising 1 to 3% of at least one monomer selected from the group of monomers consisting of amides of &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated C to C carboxylic acids and at least one hydroxy-(C to C )alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer, wherein the total amount of these monomers is from 2 to 7.5% by weight of said monomer mixture.
