Modified asphalts and methods for producing the same are disclosed. The modified asphalts can include asphalt having a T5 boiling point of 400&#xb0; C. or more, an olefin compound, and an acid promoter. The modified asphalt can include at least a portion of the olefin compound chemically grafted to at least a portion of the asphalt. The method can include exposing the asphalt, olefin compound, and acid promoter to a temperature of about 160&#xb0; C. or more.

Modified asphalts and methods for producing the same

Methods are provided for upgrading the quality of an asphalt containing wax. This can include base asphalts that naturally contain elevated levels of wax, such as base asphalts with a wax content of at least 3.0 wt %. Additionally or alternately, this can include a base asphalt containing subsequently added wax. Wax generated at a refinery can be added to an asphalt along with a pour point depressant to form an asphalt product. The additional wax can reduce the viscosity of the asphalt product at higher temperatures so that the asphalt product can be mixed and stored at a tower temperature. Additionally, the pour point depressant can unexpectedly improve the low temperature properties of the wax-containing asphalt product.

This invention relates to a composition and method for improving the storage stability of an asphalt that contains a higher molecular weight polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 10,000 which comprises adding a storage stable improving amount of a polymerized alpha-olefin prepared from an alpha-olefin of the formula ##STR1## where R is C.sub.6 to C.sub.50 alkyl, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.6 to C.sub.50 alkyl, wherein the polymerized alpha-olefin has a number average molecular weight of from about 500 to 5,000 and is characterized in that it has a congealing and melting point which is essentially no higher than the congealing and melting point of the alpha-olefin from which it is prepared.
