Limiting joint temperature. At least some of the example embodiments are systems including an electrosurgical probe and a high frequency power supply. The electrosurgical probe may include: a shaft with a distal end, a proximal end, and lumen defined within the shaft; an active electrode disposed near the distal end; a return electrode disposed on the shaft; and a temperature sensor disposed on the shaft spaced away from the active electrode and the return electrode, the temperature sensor is electrically insulated from the electrically conductive fluid. The high frequency power supply may be coupled to the active electrode, and configured to provide an electrical energy output between the active electrode and the return electrode.

Systems and methods for limiting joint temperature

Joint temperature monitoring and control systems and methods are described herein in which the temperature of a fluid within a body or joint space is determined and/or monitored despite the energy generated during treatment by an ablation probe. One or more temperature sensors are positioned along the probe proximally of the electrode assembly and measure the temperature of an electrically conductive fluid without being overly influenced by the surgical effect occurring proximate the electrode assembly. The controller coupled to the probe can also be configured to set temperature limits and treatment times as well as moderating joint temperature by altering the electrically conductive fluid flow.

A surgical device includes an elongated shaft having first and second electrically isolated electrodes coupled to the shaft such that an exposed portion of the second electrode is disposed around only part of a circumference of the elongated shaft, and includes a portion that is spaced proximally from the first electrode. Another surgical device also includes an elongated shaft having first and second electrically isolated electrodes coupled to the shaft, wherein the shaft includes a first side, and exposed surfaces of the first and second electrodes are side-facing toward the first side. Various embodiments of a 'cool back' are provided, allowing arthroscopic surgery on a first side of a device without tissue effects on a back side of the device.

A method includes recognizing an electrosurgical probe coupled to an electrosurgical generator, selecting a mode of the electrosurgical generator based upon the recognized probe, setting a therapy profile based upon the selected mode, and displaying the therapy profile. The generator can include user inputs for modifying the therapy profile. A computer implemented method for achieving a target temperature includes: a) receiving the target temperature; b) calculating a first set temperature; c) commanding a first output power level until a measured temperature is equal to or greater than the first set temperature; d) calculating an updated set temperature based upon the target temperature; e) commanding a second output power level until the measured temperature is equal to or greater than the updated set temperature; and repeating d and e until the updated set temperature is equal to the target temperature.
