A marine drive is for propelling a marine vessel in a body of water. The marine drive comprises a motor housing defining a motor cavity; a motor disposed in the motor cavity; a propulsor shaft extending from the motor housing, wherein the motor is configured to cause rotation of the propulsor shaft; a propulsor which is rotated by the propulsor shaft to create a thrust force in the body of water; and a vent conduit having a first end connected to the motor cavity and a second end which vents the motor cavity to atmosphere.

A propulsion device for rotating a propulsor to propel a marine vessel. The propulsion device includes a drive housing having a cavity that extends along a first central axis. A motor is positioned within the cavity. The motor rotates a shaft extending along a second central axis that is non-coaxial with the first central axis. The shaft is configured to rotate the propulsor to propel the marine vessel.

A system for rotating inner and outer propeller shafts via a driveshaft. The system includes a stub shaft extending between forward and aft ends, the aft end having an engagement feature for engaging with the inner propeller shaft such that rotating the stub shaft rotates the inner propeller shaft. A reverse gear and a forward gear are each rotatably coupled to the stub shaft. The reverse gear and the forward gear mesh with the driveshaft and are engageable to become rotatably fixed to the stub shaft such that rotating the driveshaft rotates the stub shaft in reverse and forward directions, respectively. An outer driving gear is coupled to the inner propeller shaft to rotate therewith. An outer driven gear is coupled to the outer propeller shaft and a pinion rotatably coupling the outer driving gear to the outer driven gear such that rotation of the outer driving gear rotates the outer propeller shaft.

Systems and methods for rotatably supporting counter-rotating propeller shafts in a marine propulsion device

A propeller shaft includes a cylindrical outer surface having a series of external splines formed thereupon and having a series of external threads formed in the series of external splines. The series of external splines engages with a mating series of internal splines on a driven gear. The series of external threads engages with a mating series of internal threads on a nut that holds the driven gear axially in place on the propeller shaft. A shaft for a marine drive unit and a marine drive assembly are also described.

Splined and threaded shaft for marine drive

A marine drive includes an output gear including a beveled gear and a hub. A propeller shaft extends through the hub. A first bearing and an adjacent second bearing are located on the hub and support rotation of the output gear. The first and second bearings have inner races and outer races. An inner spacer is located on the hub and sandwiched between the respective inner races of the first and second bearings. An outer spacer is sandwiched between the respective outer races of the first and second bearings. A bearing carrier surrounds the propeller shaft and holds the first and second bearings therein by way of a press fit. The inner and outer spacers and the bearing carrier are dimensionally sized to provide a dimensional preload on the first and second bearings to maintain the output gear in alignment with the propeller shaft during operation of the marine drive.

Marine drives and assemblies for supporting an output gear in a marine drive

A shifting apparatus for a marine propulsion device incorporates a magnetoelastic elastic sensor which responds to torque exerted on the shift shaft of the gear shift mechanism. The torque on the shift shaft induces stress which changes the magnetic characteristics of the shift shaft material and, in turn, allows the magnetoelastic sensor to provide appropriate output signals representative of the torque exerted on the shift shaft. This allows a microprocessor to respond to the onset of a shifting procedure rather than having to wait for actual physical movement of the components of the shifting device.

Method for controlling a shift procedure for a marine propulsion system

A clutch mechanism for a marine propulsion system has a cam member that is rotatable about a first axis in coordination with the rotation of a shift shaft. A cam follower is associated with the cam member and supported for axial movement along a second axis. The cam follower is provided with cam follower surface segments that cause the cam follower to move axially in a direction parallel to the second axis in response to rotation of the cam member about the first axis between first and second rotational positions. Further rotation of the cam member from the second rotational position to a third rotational position causes no further movement of the cam follower because of the shape and position of cam follower surface segments that allow continual contact between the cam member and the cam follower while allowing rotation of the cam member without associated axial movement of the cam follower.

Clutch mechanism with overtravel capability

An actuation system for a gear selector of a marine propulsion device incorporates an adjustable motion directing component that changes the path of travel of an actuator end of a push-pull cable. This adjustable change creates a beneficial effect by changing the relative positions of a shift shaft and associated link arms in relation to positions of a wire within a sheath of a push-pull cable.

A gear shift mechanism is provided in which a cam structure comprises a protrusion that is shaped to extend into a channel formed in a cam follower structure. The cam follower structure can be provided with first and second channels that allow the protrusion of the cam to be extended into either which accommodates both port and starboard shifting mechanisms. The cam surface formed on the protrusion of the cam moves in contact with a selected cam follower surface formed in the selected one of two alternative channels to cause the cam follower to move axially and to cause a clutch member to engage with either a first or second drive gear.

Shift mechanism for a marine propulsion system

A clutch apparatus for a marine drive lower gear case includes a propeller shaft rotatably mounted in a gear case housing. A drive gear for both forward and reverse is positioned in the housing coaxial with the propeller shaft and a clutch member is rotatably fixed on the propeller shaft and movable axially into drive engagement with the drive gear. Clutch engaging elements are provided on opposed portions of the drive gears and the clutch member. Shift means utilizing a positive acting cam means positively move the clutch member into and out of engagement from the drive gears. The shift means also include a releasable latch means to positively maintain the shift means in the engaged position and a preloading means between the shift means and the clutch member to snap the clutch member into engagement.
