A method of responding to a detected blowout in a coil ignition system is provided in this disclosure. The method includes receiving a characteristic regarding operation of a coil ignition system; determining a blowout condition exists for the coil ignition system based on the characteristic; and providing a command to the coil ignition system based on the determination that the blowout condition exists, wherein the command is structured to reduce a residual charge amount in the coil ignition system.

Systems and methods are disclosed for adjusting the spark timing of an internal combustion engine. According to at least one aspect of the present disclosure, the system includes an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for recirculating exhaust gas flow from at least one primary EGR cylinder of an engine into an intake system prior to combustion. According to at least one other aspect of the present disclosure, the method includes estimating a dynamic EGR fraction of exhaust gas directed into the intake system via the EGR system, estimating a steady-state EGR fraction of exhaust gas directed into the intake system at the changed mass air flow rate, computing a difference between the dynamic fraction and steady-state fraction to determine a change in EGR fraction, and applying a gain factor to the change in EGR fraction to determine a desired spark timing adjustment.

Method of spark timing adjustment for an internal combustion engine

An engine cylinder misfire detection system is provided that detects changes in exhaust manifold pressure (EMP) fluctuations, compares the EMP fluctuations with diagnostic thresholds determined with other engine characteristic information obtained from engine sensor data, and determines whether a cylinder misfire has occurred. A method of monitoring and detecting EMP fluctuations in combination with one or more sensed engine characteristics is disclosed to determine an engine cylinder misfire in a cycle of an internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder. The actuation approaches of the present invention include one or more processes for a cylinder of an engine associated with a determination of various load variables including fresh air flow, engine type, engine data inputs, and analytical determinants.
