In a method for detecting a running internal combustion engine in a hybrid vehicle, the internal combustion engine, as a first drive unit, and a second drive unit contribute toward driving the hybrid vehicle. To determine reliably whether the internal combustion engine is running during hybrid operation, an interference signal is actively introduced into the ongoing operating sequence of the internal combustion engine, and the response of the internal combustion engine to this interference signal is evaluated. If there is no response of the internal combustion engine, it is concluded that the internal combustion engine is not operating.

A method is described for starting an internal combustion engine having an E-machine coupled to it in a motor vehicle, after the input of a certain torque command at a drive control of the internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine being accelerated for the start by the E-machine, and the internal combustion engine being set by the drive control, via actuators, to specified characteristics values for the start. To reduce exhaust gas emissions at the start of the internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine is accelerated by the E-machine, without the injection of fuel, until the engine torque that is able to be implemented by the internal combustion engine, essentially corresponds to the torque command, and the injection of fuel into the internal combustion engine is only then released.

The invention relates to a procedure to heat up or keep warm an exhaust gas emission control assembly of a vehicle with a drive train containing one transmission. The drive train is powered by an internal combustion engine and at least one second drive unit. It is proposed that also in an operating state, which lies outside of the idle speed, a rotational speed or a torque of the internal combustion engine deviating from values for the engine rotational speed and the torque is set, which would exist during an identical driving condition without the heating-up or keeping warm of the exhaust gas emission control assembly.

A control apparatus for protected switching of a load encompasses at least two switch units in series with a load, to permit delivery of energy to a load when each switch unit is switched on and to block it when at least one of the switch units is shut off; an electronic control system for triggering each switch unit via a first switching path and second switching paths, and for monitoring its state; a delay element on the first switching path, such that each switch unit can be shut off both by way of a shutoff signal conveyed via the first switching path and by way of a shutoff signal conveyed via the second switching path; and in a state in which one of the switch units is shut off and the other is switched on, the electronic control system ascertains a malfunction of the first switching path if, after output of a shutoff signal on the first switching path, the other switch unit does not shut off within a predefined time window.

An internal combustion engine controller includes a main processor for monitoring operating parameters of an internal combustion engine and a triggering device, working together with the main processor, for an electric fuel pump of the internal combustion engine. The triggering device works together with an electric activation device and operates so that the fuel pump is triggered essentially without time delay after actuation of the activation device. The internal combustion engine controller has an electronic switching device which operates so that, during an initialization process of the main processor, it triggers the electric fuel pump independently of the main processor.
