A patient module () is intended for use when ventilating a patient with a pressure source () that can be fluidically coupled via the patient module () to a patient interface (), which can be connected to the airways of a patient. The patient module () includes a housing () and a valve section () in the housing () as well as an HME filter () spaced apart from the valve section (). The HME filter () is located upstream of the valve section () in relation to an expiratory volume flow, so that the HME filter () divides an interior of the housing () into a dry area and an area coming into contact with the moisture carried along by the exhaled breathing gas. The valve section () is located in the dry area. A process for operating the patient module () includes calibration steps.

A method controls an expiratory gas flow at a user interface () of a ventilator () wherein the user interface () has an exhalation valve (), which provides a positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). The method includes the following steps during a phase of exhalation: changing the positive end-expiratory pressure from a basic PEEP value () with the exhalation valve (); returning the positive end-expiratory pressure to the basic PEEP value () with the exhalation valve (); and determining an exhalation parameter. The method permits an adaptive change in the expiratory flow during the exhalation. Air trapping can be avoided, and it is possible to respond to changed exhalation parameters within one and the same phase of exhalation.

An active protective circuit for a measuring amplifier of an electrical impedance tomograph includes a circuit component arrangement including an electrode input and an output and a control input for a control voltage. The output is configured for connection to a measuring amplifier for an electrical impedance tomograph. The circuit component arrangement creates a conductive connection between the electrode input of the circuit component arrangement and the output of the circuit component arrangement when the applied control voltage is within a first voltage range and does not create a conductive connection when the applied control voltage is within a second voltage range. The voltage being applied to the control input is within the second voltage range when a voltage, which is within a cut-off range, is applied to the electrode input. A method for testing a gas sensor is based on a gas-measuring system with a test gas source and with a pumping device. A predefined quantity of a gas or of a gas mixture is fed in, from the test gas source, to the gas sensor over a predefined time and metered. The response of a measured signal of the gas sensor is determined as a sensor response. Characteristic variables, from which an indicator of the ability of the gas sensor to operate is determined, are determined from the sensor response.
