It is provided a method for generating a supercontinuum, the method comprising the following steps: a) radiating a carrier laser pulse having a first temporal width onto a first non-linear material; b) at the same time, radiating a second shorter laser pulse having a second temporal width onto the first non-linear material, thereby changing the non-linear properties of the first non-linear material and imprinting a ghost pulse having a third temporal width into the carrier pulse; the second temporal width being at least two times shorter than the first temporal width, and c) radiating the carrier pulse with imprinted ghost pulse onto the first non-linear material or a second non-linear material and generating, by self-phase modulating, a supercontinuum around the center frequency of the carrier pulse.

A method for the infrared-light-induced yield optimization of chemical reactions is provided. An energy input into at least one starting material that is subjected to a chemical reaction takes place by means of infrared light pulses having a mean wavelength in the range of 2000 to 100000 nm. The chemical reaction here is a reaction in which a product, the molecular formula of which does not correspond to the molecular formula of the starting material, is formed and wherein the yield optimization for the most part is not based on a thermal heating of the starting material. The infrared light pulses have a fixed wavelength and the energy input into the starting material takes place by means of vibration excitation by a one-photon process.

The disclosure relates to a method for providing original data that can be used for subsequently determining the function of an organ of a living organism or for subsequently diagnosing a disease or a severity of a disease of an organ of a living organism. This method is characterized by several steps, one of which is administering a marker substance to a living organism by inhalation, wherein the marker substance has a vapor pressure above 0.01 mmHg at 37&#xb0; C. In other method steps, the concentration of this marker substance in exhaled air is determined at at least two different time points. Then, a difference in marker substance concentration is calculated.

A method for controlling the emission frequency of a laser comprises: recording a first spectrum by passing a laser light emitted by the laser through a sample onto a detector, the detector being connected to a multichannel analyzer which assigns pulses detected by the detector to a channel; determining a first channel to which the maximum of a first signal in the first spectrum has been assigned; determining a second channel to which the maximum of a second signal in the first spectrum has been assigned; recording a second spectrum in analog fashion like the first spectrum; determining whether the maximum of the first signal in the second spectrum has been assigned to the first channel and whether the maximum of the second signal in the second spectrum has been assigned to the second channel; adjusting the operating temperature of the laser in the event of deviations determined in the previous step.

A method for determining the metabolic capacity of an enzyme includes time-resolved determination of the concentration of a product in exhaled air. The product is created by metabolism of a substrate, previously administered to an individual, by an enzyme of the individual. The product concentration is determined until the maximum product concentration in the exhaled air is reached. A model function is fitted to measured values of the product concentration, obtained by the time-resolved determination of the product concentration between start and end times. The metabolic capacity of the enzyme is determined based on parameters of the model function. Determining the metabolic capacity of the enzyme takes place based on at least two parameters of the model function, wherein the maximum value and time constant of the model function are not selected as parameters at the same time, and the start and/or end times are not selected as parameters.

A measurement device and a method for analyzing a sample gas by infrared absorption spectroscopy are described. The measurement device comprises a narrowband laser having a line width of less than 0.2 cmand being smaller than a width of an infrared absorption line to be measured of a sample gas. The measurement device is suited and can be arranged to measure the respiratory gas of a human or animal as sample gas, wherein the respiratory gas exchanges in the measurement chamber only by the respiration of the human or animal, and the respiratory resistance of the measurement device is less than 60 mbar.

Measurement device and method for analyzing a sample gas by infrared absorption spectroscopy

A pulse shaper for compensating group runtime effects is provided. The pulse shaper comprising a first and a second dispersive element. An optical pulse can be coupled to the pulse shaper along a coupling direction such that said pulse exits from the pulse shaper after passing through the first and the second dispersive element along an exit direction. The first and the second dispersive element are formed and arranged to be movable relative to each other such that the path length to be traversed by the optical pulse through the first and the second dispersive element after coupling to the pulse shaper can be adjusted without any change in an offset between the coupling direction and the exit direction. The first and the second dispersive element are arranged in such a way that the shape of the optical pulse experiences a change as the pulse travels through the pulse shaper.
