An engine data processor for an internal combustion engine is structured and arranged for: receiving a geometric characteristic of an exhaust unit through which the exhaust gas composition can be discharged, and determining from the geometric characteristic a smoke visibility limit value; receiving filter fill status information from an exhaust gas filter for filtering the exhaust gas composition; receiving a mean catalytic converter temperature of an exhaust gas catalytic converter for catalyzing the exhaust gas composition and determining a nitrogen dioxide conversion rate subject to the filter fill status information which has been received and the mean catalytic converter temperature; comparing the calculated nitrogen dioxide conversion rate with the smoke visibility limit value, and determining therefrom a control variable for the internal combustion engine so that the exhaust gas composition is invisible; and issuing the control variable.

Gas path set values for controlling the gas path actuators are calculated as a function of an EGR rate by a gas path model. The measure of quality is minimized by the optimizer by changing the injection system and gas path set values within a prediction horizon. The injection system and gas path set values are set by the optimizer as definitive for adjusting the operating point of the engine by using the minimized measure of quality.

A method for regulation of an internal combustion engine with an SCR catalytic converter in which the operating point of the engine is predefined by an engine control unit and the operating point of the catalytic converter is predefined by an SCR control unit. An overall system quality measure is calculated by an optimizer in accordance with fed back values of the engine control unit and fed back values of the SCR control unit, by changing the default values for the engine control unit and the SCR control unit, the optimizer minimizes the overall system quality measure for a prediction horizon regarding operating costs. On the basis of the minimized overall system quality measure the optimizer sets the default values for the engine control unit and the default values for the SCR control unit as decisive for setting the operating point of the engine and the catalytic converter.

A method for predictive open-loop and/or closed-loop control of an internal combustion engine with control variables pursuant to a model of the engine with characterizing variables and a control circuit for the control variables. The control variables are adjusted in an open-loop or closed-loop manner by measuring actual values and specifying target values of the characterizing variables and, optionally, depending on the boundary and/or environmental and/or ageing conditions. A model-based predictive non-linear controller is used for the controlling, which is constructed in a modular manner with a number of model-based predictive control modules.
