A flat belt drive is trained around spaced apart drive and idler rollers. The belt has an outer load bearing surface and an inner surface wetted to reduce friction on the inner surface where the load is applied. Drainage channels or grooves in the exterior surface of the drive and idler rollers function to remove liquid from between the rollers and the inner surface of the belt in order to maintain a high frictional coefficient therebetween. Alternatively, drainage openings are provided in the roller to convey the liquid away from the roller surface to the hollow interior thereof.

A stable reference platform is securely anchored within the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle. The positioning and anchoring of the platform is accomplished without removing or engaging the passenger seat, and in a manner which avoids soiling and/or damage to the passenger compartment. The reference platform functions to support devices used to automatically operate the vehicle during testing thereof.

The present test apparatus provides for the simultaneous loading of a test sample with longitudinal forces and with torque. For this purpose a piston rod of a longitudinal loading cylinder and a piston of a torque cylinder are coupled for relative axial movement by a fork connected to the piston rod of the longitudinal loading cylinder and guided in a torque transmitting member connected to the piston of the torque cylinder. Frictional forces and play are minimized by providing the fork ends with bearing surfaces and providing the torque transmitting member with both stationary and tiltable bearings which may be adjustable. Another embodiment provides that the bearings of the torque transmitting member are hydrostatic bearings to further reduce friction.
