Resin plasticizers are produced by esterification of keto acids derived from acylation of aromatic compounds with cyclic anhydrides, and are particularly useful in making phthalate-free articles using PVC.

Keto acid esters as PVC plasticizers

Triglyceride and other polyol ester PVC plasticizers can be produced by recovery of branched C6 to C9 aldehydes from a hydroformylation product, optional hydrogenation to the alcohol, oxidation to the acid with oxygen and/or air, recovery of the resulting acid, and esterification with glycerol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or mixtures thereof. The branched alkyl chains comprise at least 10% methyl branching. Special triglycerides are derived from branched aliphatic acids having alkyl chains with average carbon numbers from 6 to 9 and at least 10% methyl branching. These triglycerides are fast fusing plasticizers if before esterification with glycerol, an aryl acid is introduced together with the aliphatic acids.

Polyol ester plasticizers and process of making the same

Provided is a process for making non-phthalate plasticizers, by acylating an aromatic compound with a succinic anhydride to form a keto-acid, and then esterifying the keto-acid with C-COXO-alcohols to form a plasticizer compound. The aromatic rings of the aromatic compound may also be optionally hydrogenated.

Aromatic acylation with cyclic anhydride for plasticizer production

A method for preparation of secondary alcohols with a high proportion of hydroxyl group at the C2 position is disclosed. Alkyl carboxylates, high in alpha-methylcarboxylate content, are produced via reaction of an alpha-olefin and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a cerium catalyst. The resultant alkyl carboxylate is hydrolyzed to yield a secondary alcohol with a high 2-hydroxyl content. The secondary alcohol may be used to prepare esters, especially phthalate esters or cyclohexanoate diesters, which are useful as plasticizers. These esters are more effective as plasticizers than esters derived from other secondary alcohols due to their high C2 point of attachment.

Cerium catalyzed production of secondary alcohols and plasticizers based on the secondary alcohols

The invention relates to polyketone compounds and the at least partially hydrogenated products thereof, the use of said polyketone compounds and/or the at least partially hydrogenated products thereof as plasticizers, processes of making polyketone compounds and the at least partially hydrogenated products thereof, compositions comprising the polyketone compounds and/or the at least partially hydrogenated products thereof, and to articles formed from products of the invention.

Tetracarboxylic ester plasticizers

C7-C12 secondary alcohol esters of cyclohexanecarboxylic acids are especially useful as plasticizers for PVC and other plasticizable polymers. In embodiments, these plasticizers are useful in plastisol formulations to help improved processability of flexible PVC material. In other embodiments these same plasticizers can be used in blends with other plasticizers to improve processability. In preferred embodiments these same plasticizers can be used to prepare flexible PVC compounds with enhanced low temperature flexibility, low toxicity, and improved resistance to outdoor aging.

C7&#x2014;C12 secondary alcohol esters of cyclohexanoic acid

Provided are compositions, processes for making, and processes for using neoalkyl polyol esters and triglycerides as plasticizers. In one form, a neoalkylester triglyceride plasticizers can be produced by (i) drying a polyol feedstream; (ii) contacting in a reactor the dried polyol feedstream with a neoacid feedstream under effective temperature, pressure and time to form a neoalkylester plasticizer effluent stream, and (iii) purifying the neoalkylester plasticizer effluent stream to remove unreacted polyol and unreacted neoacid to form a neoalkylester plasticizer. Such plasticizers can be phthalate-free and provide outstanding properties including a suitable melting or pour point, glass transition temperature, low volatility, increased compatibility, increased hydrolytic stability, and excellent low temperature properties in a range of polymeric resins.

Process for making polyol neoalkylester plasticizers from neo acids

In a process for producing a functionalized polyalkenamer, at least one monomer comprising a monocyclic olefin having at least one pendant alkyl group bonded thereto, wherein the pendant alkyl group has at least two carbon atoms and is substituted with a polar moiety spaced by at least one carbon atom from the monocyclic olefin, is contacted with a polymerization catalyst under conditions effective to effect ring opening polymerization of the monocyclic olefin and produce the functionalized polyalkenamer.

Production of elastomeric functionalized olefin polymers

Disclosed is a selected type of copolymer composition comprising copolymers having units derived from ethylene and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) co-monomers. Such copolymer compositions: a) have a DCPD-derived comonomer unit content of from about 25 mole % to about 45 mole %; b) have a Weight Average Molecular Weight, M, of greater than about 170,000; c) comprise amorphous material and have glass transition temperatures, T, of from about 8&#xb0; C. to about 129&#xb0; C., which also fit the equation T(in &#xb0; C.)&#x2267;[(mole % DCPD&#xd7;3.142)&#x2212;4.67]; and d) comprise no significant amount of crystalline polyethylene homopolymer or crystallizable polyethylene segments within the ethylene-dicyclopentadiene copolymers. Such copolymers can be readily derivatized by hydrogenation and/or epoxidation to provide polymeric materials suitable for use as engineering thermoplastics. Also disclosed are processes for preparing and optionally further derivatizing ethylene/dicyclopentadiene copolymers having the characteristics hereinbefore described.

Ethylene/dicyclopentadiene copolymers and functionalized derivatives thereof

This disclosure is directed to an integrated method for making synthetic hydrocarbon fluids, plasticizers and polar synthetic lubricant base stocks from a renewable feedstock. More particularly, the disclosure is directed to a metathesis reaction of natural oil or its derivative ester and ethylene in the presence of an effective amount of a metathesis catalyst to form linear alpha-olefins, internal olefins and reduced chain length triglycerides. The linear alpha-olefins and/or internal olefins are polymerized to produce synthetic hydrocarbon fluids in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The reduced chain length triglycerides are converted into polar synthetic lubricant base stocks or plasticizers by hydrogenation, isomerization, followed by hydrogenations, or by hydroisomerization processes. Alternatively, the reduced chain length triglycerides can also be epoxidized to form epoxidized triglyceride plasticizers, optionally followed by carbonation, to form carbonated triglyceride plasticizers.

Production of synthetic hydrocarbon fluids, plasticizers and synthetic lubricant base stocks from renewable feedstocks

A polymer composition comprises (a) least 40 wt % (based upon the weight of the composition) of a cyclic olefin polymer comprising at least one acyclic olefin and at least 20 wt % of one or more cyclic olefins (based upon the weight of the cyclic olefin polymer), wherein at least a portion of the cyclic olefin polymer has a glass transition temperature of greater than 100&#xb0; C.; (b) an acyclic olefin polymer modifier in an amount up to 40 wt % (based upon the weight of the composition); and (c) at least 10 wt % (based upon the weight of the composition) of one of more fillers. The polymer composition has a notched Izod impact resistance measured at 23&#xb0; C. of greater than 100 J/m and a flexural modulus (1% secant method) of greater than 1400 MPa.

Polymer compositions comprising cyclic olefin polymers, polyolefin modifiers, and fillers

Triglyceride PVC plasticizers can be produced by recovery of Cto Caldehydes having low average levels of branching from a hydroformylation product, oxidizing the aldehydes with oxygen and/or air to form an acid, recovery of the resulting acid, and esterification with glycerol. Plasticizer compositions including such products or linear triglycerides combined with a secondary plasticizer and articles made therefrom are disclosed.
