A fuel rewards program wherein awards received from the purchase of discount-triggering items at a first transaction are redeemed for a price-per-unit (PPU) discount on fuel. A scanner scans product codes and inputs the information to a POS system through a comparator such that a product may be determined to be a discount-triggering item. Information regarding the discount-triggering item is first stored in a potential buffer. A rewards process processes the information in the potential buffer and stores that information in a filtered potential buffer. A potential file accumulates basic information about one or more transactions. A purchase buffer stores all of the information, which is ultimately printed on a cash register receipt. The receipt may be scanned at a fuel dispenser to begin the redemption of the PPU discount on the fuel.

System and method for generating price-per-gallon discounts for fuel

A method for processing information through a clearinghouse wherein a rewards provider ( ) assembles the reward program information and forwards it to a store chain central office ( ) for implementation. The store chain central office ( ) then transmits information to one or more of its stores ( ). The store ( ) provides a reward to a customer ( ) based upon the purchase of discount triggering items. Upon meeting the requirements for redeeming a reward, the customer ( ) redeems the reward at a gas station ( ) for gasoline. Redemption information received by the central office ( ) in the form of electronic files and redemption slips is then sent to a clearinghouse ( ) for processing. The clearinghouse ( ), receiving the information on a daily basis as bundled sums, processes the redemption information by invoicing respective manufacturers ( ) for products sold, and making payment to the stores ( ) for the costs of the discount triggering items which were sold.
