Devices, apparatus, and methods to treat Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and related telomeres including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic (PFOS), and other recalcitrant highly stable organic compounds, substances, organic matter, infectious fluids, bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, endocrine disruptors, pharmaceutical, and otherwise oxidizable material contaminants in water, aqueous fluids, condensates, concentrates, brines, and spent solid adsorbent media. The system can include hydrodynamic cavitation; acoustic sonication; electrochemical oxidation; in-line static mixing; and supplemental reagent precursors to create powerful oxidizing conditions within the equipment, and oxidants by the system that destroy said contaminants.

Systems to treat PFAS and other persistent organic compounds and oxidizable matter in aqueous fluids

A method of treating mercury-contaminated material to obtain a treated product having reduced mercury leachability includes the steps of (a) admixing the mercury-contaminated material with a reagent system comprising calcium sulfide (CaS) and trisodium phosphate (TNaP), wherein the calcium sulfide and trisodium phosphate are preferably provided at a CaS:TNaP ratio of from 2:1 to 1:2, on a dry weight reagent basis, and the reagent system is preferably provided in an amount equal to 0.4% to 5% by weight of the contaminated material; and (b) adding water as needed to achieve a moisture content of at least 5% by weight of the contaminated material.

Treatment technology directed to using mine waste as a raw material to manufacture a mine filling product for use as a suitable precursor product or mine filling product to be used as a backfill material to close a mine. The precursor product or mine filling product retains its metals and is not be able to generate acidity. According to the disclosure, the precursor product or mine filling product, when placed in a mine, may also remove metals from mine fluids in the mine it contacts, and still retain the metals it hosted when it was a mine waste prior to it being used as a raw material to manufacture the precursor stowing backfill product.

The reagent set and method of use offer environmental professionals long-term, economically viable waste management solutions for removing contaminants from contamination source areas, spill and manufacturing release sites, impacted media, and landfills, as well as from the fluids that contact reagent-treated material.

Devices and associated methods described herein in accordance with embodiments of the present technology can, for example, treat acidity and remove suspended solids and heavy metals from acid mine and acid rock drainage, as well as from other acidic and various aqueous fluids of various pH. The disclosed system includes a cavitation/electro-coagulation reaction chamber, solids separation, and other optional components including a passive media contact reaction chamber, and/or an oxidation/reduction electrode assembly to facilitate or expand upon parameters requiring treatment. A process for chemical fixation of radionuclides and radioactive compounds present in soils, solid materials, sludges and liquids. Radionuclides and other radioactive compounds are converted to low-temperature Apatite-Group structural isomorphs (general composition: (AB) (XO ) Z), usually phosphatic, that are insoluble, non-leachable, non-zeolitic, and pH stable by contacting with a suspension containing a sulfate, hydroxide, chloride, fluoride and/or silicate source and a phosphate anion. The Apatitic-structure end product is chemically altered from the initial material and reduced in volume and mass. The end product can be void of free liquids and exhibits sufficiently high levels of thermal stability to be effective in the presence of heat generating nuclear reactions. The process occurs at ambient temperature and pressure.

The present invention discloses a method of forming phosphate mineral species of the apatite family, and the mineral species thus formed, by contacting soil or solid waste material containing leachable lead with a combination of a sulfate reagent that includes one or more reactive sulfate ions and a phosphate supplying reagent that includes one or more reactive phosphate ions. The mineral species are stable, substantially water insoluble and non-leachable under normal environmental conditions. The sulfate reagent is sulfuric acid or alum in liquid or powder form. The phosphate supplying reagent is phosphoric acid, trisodium phosphate, potassium phosphate, mono basic calcium phosphate or dibasic calcium phosphate. In a preferred embodiment, the phosphate supplying reagent is phosphoric acid and the sulfate reagent is sulfuric acid or liquid alum.
