A window for a sensing system is provided. The window includes a substrate, a layered film disposed on a first surface of the substrate, the layered film including alternating layers of higher refractive index materials and lower refractive index materials, wherein the refractive index of the higher refractive index materials is greater than the refractive index of the lower refractive index materials, and a maximum hardness, measured at the layered film and by the Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test, of at least 8 GPa. The window has: an average percentage transmittance of greater than 75% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 1550 nm at normal or near normal incidence; and an average percentage reflectance of less than 10% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 1550 nm at any angle of incidence within the range of 0° to 8°.

Hardened optical windows with anti-reflective, reflective, and absorbing layers for infrared sensing systems

An article is described herein that includes: a translucent substrate having a major surface; and an anti-reflective coating disposed on the major surface and forming an anti-reflective surface. The article exhibits a single side average photopic light reflectance at the anti-reflective surface of less than 0.35%. Further, the article exhibits a single side color shift (ΔC) of less than 6 over an incident angle range from 0 degrees to 60 degrees incidence at the anti-reflective surface, wherein the anti-reflective coating comprises a physical thickness from about 50 nm to less than 500 nm. In addition, the anti-reflective coating comprises a plurality of layers that comprises at least one low refractive index layer and at least one high refractive index layer. Further, each high refractive index layer has a refractive index of greater than 2.0 and each low refractive index layer has a refractive index of less than 1.7.

Low reflectance, anti-reflective film structures with controlled color and articles with the same

Embodiments of durable, anti-reflective articles are described. In one or more embodiments, the article includes a substrate and an anti-reflective coating disposed on the major surface. The article exhibits an average light transmittance of about 94% or greater over an optical wavelength regime and/or an average light reflectance of about 2% or less over the optical wavelength regime, as measured from an anti-reflective surface. In some embodiments, the article exhibits a maximum hardness of about 8 GPa or greater as measured by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test along an indentation depth of about 50 nm or greater and a b* value, in reflectance, in the range from about −5 to about 1 as measured on the anti-reflective surface only at all incidence illumination angles in the range from about 0 degrees to about 60 degrees under an International Commission on Illumination illuminant.

Durable anti-reflective articles

A window for a sensing system is provided. The window includes a substrate having a predetermined thickness and an index of refraction for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 905 nm and a layered film disposed on the substrate, the layered film including alternating layers of a high refractive index material and a lower refractive index material, the high refractive index material having a higher refractive index than the lower refractive index material, wherein each layer of the alternating layers of the layered film has a thickness, and the thicknesses of the alternating layers are configured so that the window has a transmittance of at least 80% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength within the range of 850 nm to 950 nm. The window further includes a hardness of at least 10 GPa, at the layered film, as measured by the Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test.

Hardened optical windows for LIDAR applications at 850-950NM

A glass article is provided that includes: a glass substrate comprising a thickness and a primary surface; and a textured region defined by the primary surface. The textured region comprises a low spatial frequency region and a high spatial frequency region substantially superimposed within the low spatial frequency region. Further, the low spatial frequency region comprises an average lateral feature size that exceeds an average lateral feature size of the high spatial frequency region. In addition, the textured region comprises a surface roughness (R) from about 10 nm to about 1000 nm.

Textured, antiglare glass articles and methods of making the same

A substrate for a display article includes: a primary surface; a textured region on at least a portion of the primary surface, the textured region comprising surface features that reflect a random distribution, each of the surface features comprising a perimeter that is parallel to a base-plane extending through a thickness of the substrate below the textured region, wherein the perimeter is elliptical. The textured region can further include (i) one or more higher surfaces residing at a higher mean elevation from the base-plane and (ii) one or more lower surfaces residing at a lower mean elevation from the base-plane that is closer to the base-plane than the higher mean elevation. The higher mean elevation can differ from the lower mean elevation by a distance within a range of 0.05 μm to 0.70 μm.

Textured region of a substrate to reduce specular reflectance incorporating surface features with an elliptical perimeter or segments thereof, and method of making the same

A colored glass article includes from 40 mol % to 70 mol % SiO; from 8 mol % to 20 mol % AlO; from 1 mol % to 10 mol % BO; from 1 mol % to 20 mol % LiO; from 1 mol % to 15 mol % NaO; from 0 mol % to 8 mol % MgO; from 0 mol % to 5 mol % ZnO; and from 0.0005 mol % to 1 mol % Au. MgO+ZnO is from 0.1 mol % to 6 mol %.

Colored glass articles having improved mechanical durability

A display article is described herein that includes: a substrate comprising a thickness and a primary surface; a textured surface region; and an antireflective coating disposed on the textured surface region. The textured surface region comprises structural features and an average texture height (R) from 50 nm to 300 nm. The substrate exhibits a sparkle of less than 5%, as measured by PPD, and a transmittance haze of less than 40%, at a 0° incident angle. The antireflective coating comprises alternating high refractive index and low refractive index layers. Each of the low index layers comprises a refractive index of less than or equal to 1.8, and each of the high index layers comprises a refractive index of greater than 1.8. The article also exhibits a first-surface average photopic specular reflectance (% R) of less than 0.3% at any incident angle from about 5° to 20° from normal at visible wavelengths.

Display articles with antiglare surfaces and thin, durable antireflection coatings

A display article is described herein that includes: a substrate comprising a thickness and a primary surface; and the primary surface having defined thereon a diffractive surface region. The diffractive surface region comprises a plurality of structural features that comprises a plurality of different heights in a multimodal distribution. Further, the substrate exhibits a sparkle of less than 4%, as measured by pixel power deviation (PPD) at an incident angle of 0° from normal, a distinctness of image (DOI) of less than 80% at an incident angle of 20° from normal, and a transmittance haze of less than 20% from an incident angle of 0° from normal.

Display articles with diffractive, antiglare surfaces and methods of making the same

A colored glass article includes greater than or equal to 50 mol % and less than or equal to 70 mol % SiO, greater than or equal to 10 mol % and less than or equal to 17.5 mol % AlO, greater than or equal to 3 mol % and less than or equal to 10 mol % BO, greater than or equal to 8.8 mol % and less than or equal to 14 mol % LiO, greater than or equal to 1.5 mol % and less than or equal to 8 mol % NaO, and greater than 0 mol % and less than or equal to 2 mol % CrO. RO+RO−AlOis greater than or equal to 0.5 mol % and less than or equal to 6 mol %. AlO+MgO+ZnO is greater than or equal to 12 mol % and less than or equal to 22 mol %.

A transparent article is described herein that includes: a glass-ceramic substrate comprising first and second primary surfaces opposing one another and a crystallinity of at least 40% by weight; and an optical film structure disposed on the first primary surface. The optical film structure comprises a plurality of alternating high refractive index (RI) and low RI layers and a scratch-resistant layer. The article also exhibits an average photopic transmittance of greater than 80% and a maximum hardness of greater than 10 GPa, as measured by a Berkovich Hardness Test over an indentation depth range from about 100 nm to about 500 nm. The glass-ceramic substrate comprises an elastic modulus of greater than 85 GPa and a fracture toughness of greater than 0.8 MPa·√m. Further, the optical film structure exhibits a residual compressive stress of ≥700 MPa and an elastic modulus of ≥140 GPa.

Transparent glass-ceramic articles with retained strength and display devices with the same

A method of forming a glass laminate includes providing a substrate having a core layer and at least one cladding layer; heat treating the substrate at a temperature such that the at least one cladding layer is phase-separated after the heat treating; and etch treating the substrate for at least 10 sec. A phase-separated glass laminate includes a substrate having a core layer and at least one phase-separated cladding layer, such that the glass laminate has a % transmission of at least 96%, and the at least one cladding layer comprises a grain size in a range of 10 nm to 1 μm, or a graded glass index of greater than 5 nm.

Anti-reflection and anti-glare glass laminates

One or more aspects of the disclosure pertain to an article including an optical film structure disposed on an inorganic oxide substrate, which may include a strengthened or non-strengthened substrate that may be amorphous or crystalline, such that the article exhibits scratch resistance and retains the same or improved optical properties as the inorganic oxide substrate, without the optical film structure disposed thereon. In one or more embodiments, the article exhibits an average transmittance of 85% or more, over the visible spectrum (e.g., 380 nm-780 nm). Embodiments of the optical film structure include aluminum-containing oxides, aluminum-containing oxy-nitrides, aluminum-containing nitrides (e.g., AlN) and combinations thereof. The optical film structures disclosed herein also include a transparent dielectric including oxides such as silicon oxide, germanium oxide, aluminum oxide and a combination thereof. Methods of forming such articles are also provided.

Scratch-resistant laminates with retained optical properties

A substrate for a display article includes (a) a primary surface; and (b) a textured region on at least a portion of the primary surface, the textured region comprising: (i) one or more higher surfaces residing at a higher mean elevation parallel to a base-plane disposed below the textured region and extending through the substrate; (ii) one or more lower surfaces residing at a lower mean elevation parallel to the base-plane that is less than the higher mean elevation; and (iii) a high-index material disposed on each of the one or more lower surfaces residing at the lower mean elevation, the high-index material forming one or more intermediate surfaces residing at an intermediate mean elevation parallel to the base-plane that is greater than the lower mean elevation but less than the higher mean elevation, the high-index material comprising an index of refraction that is greater than the index of refraction of the substrate.

Textured region to reduce specular reflectance including a low refractive index substrate with higher elevated surfaces and lower elevated surfaces and a high refractive index material disposed on the lower elevated surfaces

Embodiments of a color-neutral anti-reflective coating and articles including the same are described. In one or more embodiments, a substrate includes a first major surface and an anti-reflective coating disposed on the first major surface of the substrate and having a reflective surface opposite the first major surface. In one or more embodiments, a point on the reflective surface has a single-surface reflectance under a D65 illuminant with an angular color variation, ΔEθ that is less than 5, where ΔE=√{(a*−a*)+(b*−b*)}, and a*and b*are color values a* and b* values of the point measured from a first angle θ, and a second angle θ, where θand θare any two different viewing angles at least 5 degrees apart in a range from about 10° to about 60° relative to a normal vector of the reflective surface.
