Electrocatalyst which are formed of a carbon support, which is a carbon black with an H content of >4000 ppm and, as the catalytically active component, platinum or bi- or multi-metallically doped or alloyed platinum. The electrocatalysts are prepared by deposition of noble metals on the carbon black surface. They can be used for the production of fuel cells.

Electrocatalyst for fuel cells

The present invention is directed to carbon blacks having organic groups. The organic groups are connected by one or two carbon atoms of a C&mdash;C single bond or double bond that are not a component of an aromatic system, contain at least one activating substituent on at least one carbon atom of the C&mdash;C single bond or double bond and contain no cyclic C structure or 2,3-diazabicyclo&lsqb;2.2.1&rsqb;hept-2-ene. The invention includes methods of producing these carbon blacks in which black is reacted with organic compounds containing a C&mdash;C double bond or triple bond activated by at least one substituent. The carbon blacks can be used as fillers, reinforcing fillers, UV stabilizers, conductance blacks or pigments.

Carbon black

Carbon black characterized by a STSA surface of between 20 and 180 m /g, a 24M4-DBP absorption of between 40 and 140 ml/100 g, a specific BET surface of between 20 and 250 m /g, a content of 0.01 to 20 wt. % of silicon, referred to its overall weight, and a tan &dgr; /tan &dgr; ratio greater than 3.37&minus;0.0068 STSA is produced by mixing silicon-containing compounds with the carbon black raw materials in the oxidative pyrolysis of the carbon black raw materials and optionally using carbon black oil as fuel. The carbon black can be used as a filler in rubber mixtures, preferably for tires.

Carbon blacks doped with elements that are not carbon, wherein pairs of carbon atoms have been replaced by iso-electronic pairs of elements or combinations of elements. They can be used as a pigment or filler in rubber, plastics, paints, inks or the like.

Inversion carbon blacks and a method for their manufacture are disclosed. The inversion carbon blacks have a lower rolling resistance with identical or improved wet skid behavior. The particle size distribution contains a smaller proportion of particles with large diameters. This leads to an improved abrasion behavior of rubber compounds which were prepared using these carbon blacks. The inversion carbon blacks can be manufactured in conventional carbon black reactors by controlling the combustion in the combustion chamber in such a manner that carbon black nuclei form, which are immediately brought into contact with the carbon black raw material. The carbon blacks present a lower proportion of larger particles if the additions of combustion air and carbon black raw material are increased in an appropriate manner.

Inversion carbon blacks and method for their manufacture

A process for continuous dry granulation of powdered carbon black. Granulation is performed with the assistance of a granulator. As a result, for comparable sized equipment, the carbon black throughput can be increased several times as compared with pelletizing drums used in the conventional manner.

Carbon black pellets which can be produced by the addition of wax during dry granulation of carbon black powder. The carbon black pellets are distinguished by a pellet hardness of at least 0.15 N with a wax content of less than 10 wt. %, based on the total weight of the carbon black pellets.

Carbon black pellets and a process for the production thereof

Disclosed are improved carbon blacks and a process for producing them. The improved carbon blacks are distinguished from conventional blacks having the same CTAB surface, after incorporation into SSBR/BR rubber compositions, by a lower rolling resistance with equal or better wet skid behavior. The carbon blacks containing silicon are suitable as reinforcing carbon blacks for rubber mixtures and give the latter viscoelastic properties such as reduced rolling resistance in tires. At the same time, the wet traction is even improved in the process.

Carbon black and processes for manufacturing

A carbon black reactor having a combustion chamber, a mixing chamber and a reaction chamber positioned along a longitudinal axis of the reactor. The chambers communicate with each other so as to provide a flow path for the hot combustion gases as the combustion gases travel from the combustion chamber, through the mixing chamber and into the reaction chamber. The mixing chamber is designed in the form of an axial narrow area in a dividing wall separating the combustion chamber from the reaction chamber. In addition to the mixing chamber, the combustion chamber and the reaction chamber additionally communicate with each other through at least one bypass bore provided in the dividing wall and positioned radially externally to the mixing chamber and internally to the surface of the combustion chamber. The bypass bores can be either axially aligned so as to be parallel to a central, axial axis of the mixing chamber or inclined. The inclination of the bypass bores can be either in a divergent combustion flow arrangement or a converging combustion flow arrangement. The mixing chamber can either have a constant diameter surface along its length or a surface which narrows in an upstream to downstream direction. The extra-axial bypass bores provide a combustion gas flow, which has not been subjected to the cooling effect of the introduced feedstock, to the reaction chamber in an area radially external to the outlet opening of the mixing chamber.

Carbon black reactor and method of producing carbon black

A reactor and method for producing carbon black which involves arranging the combustion fuel conduits in a circumferential arrangement within the forward wall of the combustion chamber and providing an impact surface on the opposite side of the combustion chamber. The impact surface forms part of a forward wall of a constricting section which has a tapering passageway with a large opening in fluid communication with the combustion chamber and a smaller opening downstream. A throat passageway or restricting ring is provided at the downstream end of the tapering passageway and the throat passageway opens into an expansion chamber which, in turn, opens into a quenching chamber. Carbon black feedstock is injected into either the tapering passageway, the throat section, or both. The injection of the feedstock is achieved through the use of an axially extending lance and/or one or more radially extending injectors. Combustion oxidant is input through the same apertures formed in the forward wall of the combustion section. The resultant combustion products are impacted against the impact surface so as to create a highly turbulent flow of combustion gases which passes through the tapering passageway, throat passageway, expansion chamber, and quenching chamber.

Method and apparatus for producing carbon black

The invention concerns a method for dry-pelletizing carbon black, allowing to control pellet quality and increasing the output of any particular pelletizing apparatus. The method calls for pre-compacting the material to be pelletized by means of vacuum before or during pelletizing. The invention also includes two apparatus to carry out the single-stage method version, comprising a pelletizing drum in which are mounted vacuum filter surfaces to pre-compact the powdery initial material in parallel with the on-going prepelletizing procedure. In one apparatus, the inside surface of the drum is a filter surface, in the other apparatus, bundles of stationary filter pipes are provided in the lower drum space.

A valve bag adapted to have a filler nozzle inserted therein for filling the bag with bulk material is provided in its top portion with a filler valve which includes a tube of relatively stiff material extending inwardly from an opening in a wall of the bag. Secured to the inner end of the tube is a valve member in the form of a tube of limp, extremely flexible foil which projects inwardly beyond the end of the tube. The foil tube is normally collapsed to form a closure, but is expanded by insertion of a filler nozzle therethrough.
