A multimodal explosive, in particular for blast charges, which has, for increasing the power, a powder additive which is formed by a hydrogen-terminated monocrystalline silicon powder of at least one grain size range, which powder has the advantage that no oxidation phenomenon takes place even over many years&#x2014;even at storage in ambient air. Due to the non-oxidized crystal surfaces, advantageously an immediate joint reaction with the explosive takes place in the detonation front and also extends into the post-reaction period with increasing crystal sizes, so that a different propellant effect is achieved depending on the additive.

An insensitive pressable explosive with a high level of energy comprises octogen grains or hexogen which are coated with a polysiloxane solution.

Insensitive explosive molding powders are provided that include an explosive component, a binder and a plasticizer. The insensitive molding powders include explosive crystals that are bound by a binder system. Moreover, the insensitive high explosive molding powder of the present invention has a bi-/tri-/tetramodal grain composition comprising coarse grain (280-360 &#x3bc;m with an upper limit of 500-700 &#x3bc;m) and fine grain (e.g., 35-45 &#x3bc;m) explosive crystals that a bonded by a binder system comprising a plasticizer and a binder. The molding powder of the present invention is coated in waterless solvent process having a solvent content of less than 0.01 wt. % and is immediately ready for pellet pressing.

A penetrator, including a penetrator housing in which there is arranged an explosive charge and an ignition system for the triggering of the explosive charge. The penetrator housing consists of a composite of a steel outer housing and a heavy-metal inner component, whereby the heavy-metal inner component, at predetermined external dimensions of the penetrator, is provided for the reduction of the mass of the steel outer housing and thus leads to an increase in the volume of the explosive charge and correspondingly to an increase in the mass of the explosive charge.

In a nanostructured reactive substance and a process for producing the same, intermixing of silicon and oxidizing agent on a nanometer size scale permits virtually direct contact between the fuel and the oxidizing agent, only separated by a barrier layer. After the barrier layer is broken open, fuel and oxidizing agent are spatially directly together and can react, liberating energy. The reactive substance has a high reaction rate in comparison with conventional reactive materials.

An electrical igniter cap has a reproducible igniter characteristic by virtue of the fact that, at the firing side, an igniter unit is covered by a sheeting of plastic material which is rupture-resistant but tears quickly, and also at the firing side it bears against a sieve plate with defined hole cross-sections.

A fuse-less ballistic explosive projectile (1) with a great fragmentation effect has a secondary explosive (50) with a special structure (75), the secondary explosive detonating upon impact. The secondary explosive (50) surrounds within a projectile cap (24) a conical projection (30) of a penetration core (18). Transmission of the firing effect from the secondary explosive (50) is effected through a central through bore (40) of the penetration core (18) to a large-volume bursting charge (60) arranged in a projectile body (10).

Fuseless ballistic explosive projectile

Described is a system (10) for protecting a target such as an armoured vehicle, a bunker or the like from missiles. The protective system (10) has a launching container (12) with at least one launching tube (36) for an associated fragmentation projectile (38), mounted adjustably on a base portion (14). A sensor arrangement (26, 28) is provided for detecting the target to be combatted and aligning the launching container (12) with the target to be combatted. A control device (32) for a drive arrangement (24) is connected together with the sensor arrangement (26, 28) by way of a signal processing device (30). The drive arrangement (24) serves for aligning the launching container (12) with respect to the base portion (14). The/each fragmentation projectile has a special fragmentation filling (40) and a fuse device (44) for controlling the time of detonation.

System for protecting a target from missiles

In a protection arrangement for affording protection from projectiles (13) attacking armoured vehicles (11) such as in particular combat tanks catapult-type plate modules (18) are no longer carried directly by the structure of the vehicle (11) to be protected but by a front mounting (17) which is of comparatively lightweight structure but which is rigid in respect of deformation by virtue of strut structure means of a three-dimensional framework-like configuration and which in particular is mounted in front of the front (16) of a combat tank body (12) but which can also be provided therearound. Upon triggering of a module (18) by a sensor (22) which is fixed with respect to the vehicle and which extrapolates the current attack trajectory (23) two plates (19) which are oriented in mutually parallel relationship are flung away in mutually opposite directions by the acceleration device (20) which is arranged centrally between the plates and which is for example electromagnetic or preferably pyrotechnic, so that the load-bearing front mounting (17) has to carry practically no acceleration reaction forces. One of the two plates (19) which are oriented approximately parallel to the attack trajectory (23) and which are accelerated transversely thereto hits the approaching projectile (13) laterally in the front region and thereby alters the angle of incidence, with a reduction in kinetic energy or triggering of the warhead, so that even impact against the vehicle (11) no longer results in penetration.

A projectile-forming explosive charge-insert of intensified penetrating power into a target, wherein a mass or weight component is centrally positioned in the insert, and the weight member possesses at least one shank projecting into the explosive charge. The weight member or mass serves as a stabilizer during the deformation of the insert into a projectile. The deformation procedure is favorably influenced by the weight member; in effect, during the collaboration of the insert in the region of the head, the mass or weight member acts in a damping or attenuating manner. Governing for the attenuating property of the weight member is, accordingly, its length towards the explosive and its attenuating capacity specific to its material.

An article of ammunition including a projectile-forming insert, wherein a supporting member which is constituted from a foam material is interposed between the insert and a structural component. The foam material possesses, at least in the region bordering against the insert, a density of at most 200 kg/m.sup.3.

A warhead for an airborne body which is employed for the attacking of a lightly-armored target through the intermediary of splinters or fragments, and wherein the warhead possesses within a protective enclosure a safe-and-arm and triggering arrangement, an explosive charge and a splinter-forming insert.

An active component of submunition for utilization from a carrier against different target objects, especially against semi-hard and hard or heavily armored target objects; as well as warheads for this purpose and flechettes which are preferably deployed over the targets through the intermediary of such warheads. The active component incorporates at least one warhead having flechettes, which is equipped with a propellant or propulsion mechanism for the acceleration of the warhead in the direction of effect for the flechettes, and with an ejector piston for additional acceleration of the flechettes through the ejection from the precedingly accelerated warhead.

A warhead casing containing an explosive charge for the formation of projectiles, and in which the casing has portions with notches formed therein to facilitate the formation of splinters or fragments in addition to the projectiles. The notches may be formed in the outside surface, inside surface or both inside and outside surfaces of the casing to provide splinters of specific sizes and shapes optimized for the attacking of specific types of targets.

A warhead or horizontal fragmentation mine, which includes an explosive charge arranged within a housing, which is covered at the front end thereof with a concave or planar coating or cladding; and a method for producing the warhead. The coating is entirely, or at least overwhelmingly, constituted of a brittle heavy-metal or hard or carbide metal with a static fracture or breaking expansion of 15 or 25%, in which the coating is decomposed during the detonation into a large number of natural fragments or splinters of certain quantity, which spread out in a definite fragment cone or fragment wedge, and wherein the ratio of the quantity of the coating to that of explosive consists of approximately 1:0.4 to 1:0.6.
