A process for operating a burner fed with liquid fuel, in particular a vaporization burner of a heater in which, preferably, a motor vehicle add-on heater is involved. In this operating process, after the burner has been in steady state operation for a predetermined period, the fuel feed is briefly interrupted. The predetermined period of steady state operation of the burner is preferably about 5 to 20 minutes, while the fuel feed is interrupted for about 5 to 25 seconds. With this operating process, deposits on the burner can be reduced so that the service life of the burner can be considerably increased.

Process for operating a burner fed with liquid fuel

A heating device, particularly an automotive heating device, in which a noise muffling device is integrated within the heating device. The muffler can be provided in the combustion pipe defining the combustion chamber, or the combustion pipe, itself, can be designed as the muffler. The muffler operates by absorption and/or reflection sound muffling techniques in accordance with various embodiments, and may, simultaneously, purify the combustion gases, for example, by catalytic afterburning, and/or by filtering of soot particles. The muffler is arranged in a hot zone, but not in the flame area of the combustion chamber, to achieve a self-cleaning action. In other embodiments, noise muffling material is arranged in an exhaust gas collection chamber to achieve sound muffling based on reflection and/or absorption and/or other conventional sound reduction methods. In all cases, the need for an external muffler in the exhaust line from the heating device is eliminated.

A vaporization burner of the type that has a carrier connected with a fuel line on which an absorbent body is located is provided with a heat conducting body for quicker fuel vaporization and for increasing the temperature on the surface of the carrier that faces the combustion chamber. The heat conducting body is formed of a heat resistant and highly heat conductive material and projects into the flame zone of the combustion chamber. The heat conducting body may be attached releasably to the carrier or it may be fastened to it by means of press welding. The heat conducting body may be developed as a hollow body, preferably as a piece of pipe, whereby the end projecting into the flame zone may be open or closed. For closing of the end of the heat conducting body that projects into the flame zone, when the conductive body is formed from a piece of pipe, the free end may be compressed. Furthermore, the heat conducting body may be arranged centrally or eccentrically on the carrier.

Vaporization burner

A vaporization burner for a heater operated by means of liquid fuel, especially a motor vehicle heater. The burner is equipped with a combustion chamber and an absorbent body that can be acted upon by fuel via a fuel connection which is disposed on a carrier in the combustion chamber. In order to ensure a fast vaporization of the fuel even in the case of combustion chambers of small dimensions, the carrier is supported in the combustion chamber, so that it is protected against the dissipation of heat from it to surrounding parts.

An electromagnetic fuel delivery pump is formed by a combination of a diaphragm pump and a metering pump. Each of the pumps have working chambers and flow control valves are arranged to enable interconnection of the working chambers when the diaphragm pump executes a delivery stroke and the metering piston pump executes a suction stroke. In a preferred embodiment, a diaphragm of the diaphragm pump is disposed directly on an extension of a piston of the metering piston pump, which piston is connected with an armature of an electromagnet that produces the delivery stroke of the piston metering pump and the suction stroke of the diaphragm pump. The delivery stroke of the diaphragm pump and the suction stroke of the piston metering pump are executed under the influence of a common return spring.
